How many web sites are there on on the Internet?

If anyone says 'a lot' I'll... I'll. I don't quite know what.

Seriously, I need some *fairly* accurate figures about the number of web
sites on the Net now, and how this figure has changed over the last three
years.

Any ideas?

I'd be grateful.

There is absolutely no source of information, reliable or not, to even
roughly estimate this. Moreover some "sites" are one page only, some
many hundreds (thousands) pages.

But, as the old Chineese saying assures:

"Web site not accessible? Do not despair, there are numerous other..."

I think it would be an impossible task to find out how many sites
there are. You could start going to each ISP and asking how many of
their customers have sites. Then go to all the places like geocities,
xoom, and tripod and find out how many sites are there. Then go to all
the universities and find out how many they have. Don't forget the web
is the World WW. You will have to get all of this information
internally not just in North America. I have probably missed some
other sources for websites. You will have to figure out what they
might be. Have fun.

What's your definition of "web site"? Do you mean "web page" or do you
mean "domains with unique IP addresses" or what?

There is a publication called "The Matrix" which I see quoted a lot. I
believe one of the principals of the publication is J Quarterman. It
makes estimates of numbers of machines, etc.

I sent you a gif of a chart that I found. I do not think I can post any
images. Hope it helps you.
