Setup took awhile. I needed to install various software for the mp3
player, image viewer, browser and some other features. Most of these
were included with the install disk, but it took awhile. I felt like
I needed to install a number of thrid party pieces to get all the
parts working right. I did call support and talked with knowledgable
folks relatively quickly a number of time.
The biggest problem is the size. I had an old Motorola Startac, and
often kept this in a belt clip. I did buy a belt clikp for this
(different from the holster that the unit came with) but it is large
to keep there for much of the time. Generally it is not something you
will want to have on your hip all the time. It is not large as a
palm, but compared to most cell phones today it is very bulky. Not
something you take out when you have no bat a just are wearing casual
shorts for a jaunt.
As a phone I am quite happy. Talks well and people seem to hear me
fine. Has basic features I like. Simple method to put in silent mode
(hold the down volume button on the side of the unit for about 3
seconds). I set the phone to automatically go to the dial/phone
section whenever I open the unit. Simple one button speed dial
settings. I can open the phone, enter in one number and hit send for
my regular numbers. Access to recent calls and calling history is
simple. Small readout on top indicates who is calling (if it matches
a name in your contacts), also has time and signal strength. These
are handy. WHen you are browsing your contacts you can hit the phone
number to quickly dial or hit the name to view edit contact
information.
MP3 player is just so-so. Bought a 256Mb card and have put about 30
songs on. One problem is with the setting to automatically go tot he
phone mode by opening the unit, the MP3 player stops if I open it up.
The software is also a bit clumsy and navigating the songs still
confuses me. I also had to buy headphones for about $30 and they are
the ear-buds style. I find these awkward and uncomfortable. The
sound is good, just limited to the quality of the source. I also do
not commute much so do not really use this much.
Battery life seems OK. I did purchase an additional charger as I have
the cradle at work, but do need to charge this occasionally over the
weekends or if I am out of the office for an extended period. If I
used the MP3 player I may need to charge more often.
It is a bit pricey, especially as you purchase the add-ons. I bought
the headphones ($39), the leather cover and belt clip ($20?), the 256
Mb card ($69?), additional charger ($29?). I paid a lot for the unit,
but I think it can now be purchased for $399 after rebate.
The botttom line is that if you love the palm and are not looking for
a small phone this is a great purchase. If you like to carry the
phone in your pocket or on your hip a lot of the time you will not be
happy.
Good Luck!
