I run several 802.11b small networks and since their introduction I've
found that the best performing adaptors for static PCs have been USB
attached which can be sited for best reception (e.g. D-Link DWL-120).

I am looking to upgrade one of these networks to 802.11g equipment but
now find manufacturers have reverted to selling PCI adaptors with
aerials built-on, and there don't seem to be any USB types around.

Is this because there's a performance problem with the higher "g"
speed through a USB port?

I'm reluctant to go back to PCI Card + Aerial combinations because of
reception problems with the positioning of several of the mini-towers
involved.

TIA,

Probably yes - USB 1.0 is too slow to support Wireless G, and 2.0 is still
rare on older machines.

You can always get an external antenna.

They are available, I use a Netgear WG121, which will work on a USB 1.1
port - it works well and has excellent range.

USB 2.0 PCI cards are about £10.00 if you don't have USB 2.0 already and
want to utilise the device to its full potential

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its
swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they
