In the intentions of setting up a wireless network at home, focused on
internet access, what hardware is required for the setup of a laptop
for ADSL access without the intervention of a desktop?

This is the general idea:
*PCMCIA card for laptop, connecting to wireless modem
*ADSL modem with direct connection to phone line (BT line)

There's the problem of setting up a connection between the laptop and
the wireless modem too.

Using the above, anyone know if it's possible to setup a wireless
internet connection accessible to the laptop? Rply to
bobm...@hotmail.com, or paste here. If so, what extra hardware, short
of a desktop computer might be required? Recommendations welcome.

soho router & access point or router/AP combo and a WiFi card for laptop

look here for more info on hardware & hwo-to's
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/

link bar near top "Home | Networking etc"

personnally I use an old linksys BEFSR41, an 8port switch "for desktops &
printers", an original Apple Airport base station "as AP, same guts as
Orinoco RG1000" and client cards for portables from Cisco, Orinoco, Linksys,
Farallon & Dlink w/o trouble

Might want to take a look at the Linksys WAP11/BT which is specifically
for the UK market and provides the ADSL interface on the wireless access
point, as I understand it.

http://www.insight.com/uk and do a search for WAP11, it's the /BT one
that should suit.

I just got an Actiontec Wireless Home Gateway plus 2 USB Wireless adapters
from Dabs yesterday, I think they have one left in their "clearance corner",
I got the gateway for £133, which had the wireless card included, plus it
has a 4 port 100Mb switching hub on it plus a *basic* firewall, DHCP
services etc. I got the USB wireless adapters for £98 for a twin pack.

It was really easy to set up, my friend arrived up with his laptop are we
were running multiplayer network games in different rooms within about 5
mins, I get an 80% signal strength when using the wireless USB adapter
upstairs and the gateway sitting dowstairs which is pretty good.

I'm just waiting to get switched over to my old BT line again so I can order
Broadband, then its just a case of ordering an Ethernet ADSL modem and
plugging it into the Gateway to share the connection wirelessly. I'm
looking at the one on the Scan site which is cheap but should do the job.

I read the review at
http://www.80211-planet.com/reviews/AP/article/0,4000,10649_915821,00.html
and decided to take a chance, the firmware has been upgraded since and it's
been up constantly for me this past 24 hours that I've had it. There lots of
other reviews if you do a search in Google.

There are better setups out there, but this works from out of the box and is
dead easy to set up.

Ok so for £133 you got the gateway, you now have to get the ADSL modem
on top of this.

The WAP11/BT is about £120 from Insight. I presume that since it says
"For BT Openworld" it has the ADSL modem built in already but the
purchaser would need to check! Maybe it's just a different connection?
Or a different manual?!

Maybe I was being too optimistic to expect the unit to be a wireless AP
which includes the ADSL modem? Someone want to find out?
