I am sharing a cable modem with a D-Link DI-713P. Computer #1 wired to
gateway is working fine. Computer #2 is successfully connecting wirelessly
through a Belkin USB network adapter in a nearby bedroom. Computer #3 cannot
connect on the far side of the house because of range problem. I bought a
DWL-900AP to stand alone in the middle of the house to extend the signal. I
now get a signal, but that is all. I don't understand the setup for this
setup. Will this device work in this mode? Should I let the AP be a DHCP
client, or set an IP address? I am using a standard setup on the 713P. The
gateway is 192.168.0.1, and it is giving out addresses in the 192.168.0.100
to 105 range.

The DWL-900AP will not associate as a client with the DI-713P and at the
same time act as an AP for the computer. Run a wire from the DWL-900AP back
to the cable modem and put a switch or a hub there to connect both APs to
the cable modem.

Running a wire back is not an option. Is there a device that WILL work for
this setup. I have seen references to "repeaters" in this NG. Is that what I
am looking for? Would the DWL-900AP + do it? I have seen postings that say
the new firmware for this model adds a repeater mode.

Thanks, Michael

The 900AP+ will work in repeater mode with the new firmware, however this
mode is proprietary and you will not be able to extend the range of just any
AP. The AP whose range you are trying to extend must be compatible. For
example, some that are supported are DWL-1000AP, DI-614+ and DI-714P+. Some
that are not supported are DWL-900AP, DI-713P, and DI-714. So as of right
now, the 900AP+ repeater mode does not support your router. This may change
with future firmware updates but that's the way it stands right now.

With new firmware, how do you activate repeater mode? Is this a hidden mode
or on the menu of choices?

With the 900AP+, it is listed along with the other modes if you have the new
firmware.
