I heard somewhere that there were some coffee houses that provide
internet access/computer services. If these do exist, can someone
send me a pointer/address/phone number?

Thanks in advance

I'm not quite sure where it is, or the name, but there is
one somewhere near MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Up until recently, the News Cafe in New York City (19th street between
5th and 6th ave.) was offering access.

You should also check out the Electronic Cafe in Los Angeles (I think)
and check out sfbay net which is supposedly hooking up several coffee
bars in the San Francisco bay area.

Hope this helps.

There's one in Sydney, Austria. Might be a bit far for you to drive though.

There was a show on PBS here in Atlanta awhile back, and they mentioned a
little coffee shop in Telluride (sp?) Colorado that had Internet access.
For a small, reasonably isolated town they're really trying to make
technology accessible to the 'masses'. Hope this helps. I don't really
have anymore details....but I'm sure they were the only one in town. :)

You are probably thinking of the Liberty Cafe, 497b Mass Ave, Central Square,
Cambridge 02139. At this point the T1 link, like the soda water, the decaf,
the aspartame, and the good live music are still in the realm of vaporware.
(They've been open only a month or so, and are impressive even with the
growing pains.)

Their Internet connectivity seems to be Mac based. Whatever it turns out
to be, if one can telnet with it I hope to post from there someday.

Ummm...Sydney, Austria - possibly! But not here in Sydney, Australia, I
don't think. I had a machiato and an IRC in a computer store in Vancouver
a few weeks ago though...unfortunately I can't remember the name of the
place. I think it might have been on West 6th Avenue, or somewhere 'round
there. Good store, and *excellent* coffee!

If you're talking about San Francisco, there's two choices that I know
of.. one is the Icon on 9th and Folsom, with full Internet access. The
others are coffee houses that have SF NET terminals in them, which you can
access the SF NET system, or use it as a public dialout terminal. SF Net
has Internet e-mail and a few newsgroups at this time, full access is
still in the works. You can e-mail wgre...@sfnet.com for more
information, or use your modem to call 415.824.8747 for a direct
connection. Other local SF NET numbers are available from that number.

There were one or two in Toronto, which has a pretty large
net.literate community (and a pretty large literate community). Call
the Toronto alternative paper called "eye"; in addition to the usual
theater review, movie review, music review, and book review columns,
they have a regular Internet review column (!) which mentioned them a
couple of months ago. Cool paper. Cool town.

Any of those cafes plan to be part of First night in Cyberspace ? I would
like to extend an offer to all of you for this new year. Join in on the
first night in Cyberspace event, this saturday.. TONS of fellow
internauts all over the world will. We, at Dorsai, are putting up
decoration in our IRC channel for this event. #dorsaihall is the channel
and the fun starts on saturday. So let's all join in and have a virtual
party. For those of you who are organizing parties at your respective
places, I would reccomend keeping a terminal open on this night. Let's
make sure that the net gets into 95 with a big media event like this one :)

How do they stop people smearing their cappucinos over the monitor or
dropping crumbs betweeen the keys? What about if some K2aD 3l3eT wA2eZ

Opportunities for mischeif are many, questions abound. I guess they run

We're sealing our keyboards with that plastic stuff so it won't matter
if people spill. (Plus we're starting out with dumb terminals--who
cares really.) We're offering very limited access--basically gopher,
telnet and www. Anything more you want, you need to buy an actual
account somewhere and telnet there. (Preferably from Teleport, because I
work there.)

The is a shop called The Cappuccino Cafe just off the Otterbein Campus
in Westerville, OH (just north of Columbus) that has a PAT (Public Access Terminal).
It is a pay-per-use, complete with coin changet that can be used to access
a local internet provider. You must of course have an account with the
provider, but it sure makes it easy to get your mail etc.

This PAT also has access to many of the local BBS's in and around Columbus.

The Portland, Oregon newspaper just reported on a place called 'The
Habit' at 21st and Clinton streets in Southeast Portland that has good
espressos, lattes, etc. and five PCs with internet access. Apparently you
get so many minutes free if you buy coffee. If you just want to use the
terminal, that's available for a buck or so. This idea sounds so good, I
wonder why I didn't think of it myself.
Come to think of it, it's an idea anybody could copy, once it's out there.

DC is the *last* place I'd call, for anything.

Good Idea??? I think Not! Lets face it with the growth of access to the
internet (and with more and more people wasting BW coffeeshops with
internet access should be discurraged!) I say people should have to
undergo extensive testing (gov't regulated of course) before they are
