I wonder if anyone can help me. My brother-in-law, being an IBM employee, has
an account on a machine called "dkibmvm1" in Denmark. I would like to
communicate with him by E-mail, but as we are on different networks it is not
completely obvious how this is possible. I would assume that there is some
gateway somewhere between the networks. Does anybody know how I can find out
what address to use. I have his IBM electronic address but I suppose I need
to stick something onto the end of it to for my messages to make it all the
way to their destination.
Any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

What you're looking for is an Internet/Bitnet-Gateway. A safe way to get your
mail delivered is routig it over cunyvm.cuny.edu:
user%dkibmvm...@cunyvm.cuny.edu
It might also be worth a try (depends on mailer) to address your mail directly
to us...@dkibmvm1.bitnet.
Hope this helps, David

This is as of a couple years ago, when I last worked at IBM, although
I don't believe anything has changed. At that time, IBM had only a
couple nodes on bitnet, mostly at research divisions. However, all
nodes on their internal network, VNET, could send and receive Internet
mail. The employee had to get permission through his/her manager. If
the above brother has access, the address would be something like
us...@dkibmvm1.vnet.ibm.com.

Your brother in-law should be able to gain most of the information for
you, IBM run an internet <-> x.400 gateway somewhere in France.
If he has an X.400 address please post it in here and I will try to
transpose it to his internet address for you.

For example:
whois costello
will return:
Costello, Edward is e...@pok.vnet.ibm.com from INTERNET
aliased as COST...@VNET.IBM.COM
Costello, E.P. (Edward) is costello@vnet from BITNET
Multiple requests may be made in a single note provided that the
number of names found does not exceed the daily limit of 25.
If the person you want to contact doesn't have an account (more like
an alias than an account) they only need to run one teensy little
command, no authorization from management is necessary. Registrations
take effect overnight.
