Normally the BT Yahoo mail (pop3 and smtp) works ok. However we are having
some little local difficulty with our community netowrk and so there is
re-routing going on even before stuff hits the net. As a consequence any
outgoing e-mail (port 25) is being re-routed through a BT connect
connection and somehow I am being stopped from accessing mail.btinternet.com
which is my real smtp server.
I don't want to burden the adminstrator while he is up to his neck in
alligators. I wondered if I could change my outgoing mail settings to go out
via something other than port 25, and would BTinternet then accept them ?
(Yes I am using authentication etc.)

Why do you still want to use bt?
What's wrong with using your real ISPs?

Sorry to hear you can't access btinternet.* I've had that difficulty
in my time <cough>
As to ISPs intercepting mail traffic, this is a right royal PITA but
BTI are not the only offenders.
Unfortunately, despite the paranoid way people monitor every so-called
"intrusion attempt" on their own PC, it is not sufficient merely to
send data to a computer on the 'net, it has to go to the right port.
Ihe port number is as much part of the address as the IP address or
name of the server.
So if you change the port, BTi probably won't intercept it (I say
probably as I have found it is unwise to predict what BTi will do. Our
resident soothsayer, Mogga, is quite good at predicting technological
failures.) However, you are then sending it to a non-existent server,
which presumably defeats the object.
Why would you willingly choose to use BTinternet for your outgoing
server? Does it matter who you send through? To get at your mailbox
you use POP3: there's not the slightest reason why you shouldn't mix
and match on your "account", using whatever works for outgoing and
picking up your incoming mail from your POP box.
Maybe I've missed what you're talking about.
