Crappy newsreader but you can't have everything
When I rang BTopenworld to cancel they didn't even ask why, or ask me if I
wantedto use the balance of my months subscription just offered a refund of my
outstanding subscription (which was credited to my a/c within 24hrs).
So - set your mail reader to check automatically every 10 minutes.
>5 phone numbers. If one is engaged next one is automatically tried. This has
>only happened once in 10 days.
AOL takes about a minute to connect. Most real ISP's take 15 seconds and have far
fewer engaged tones.
>48000 - 57600 connection speeds (usually the latter) with commensurate download
>rates
Ha ha ha. You've been VERY lucky then. Connection speed is mainly a function
of the phone line quality as it's negotiated well before any real digital stuff gets started.
However, download rates do depend on efficiency of compression and how busy the
routers and servers are. Nothing could be worse than BTi on a bad year,
but you should try a few other ISP's even if it means paying local call rate for a few tests.
Round here virgin.net runs like greased lightening. Compression efficiency takes an
unavoidable hit on AOL because they use a VPN.

Have you asked them how to uninstall AOL without it leaving crap all over your PC?
>Automatic notification of e-mail with continous monitoring whilst online (no
>need to keep checking with outlook express).
Most mail readers will check automatically, so you may as well set the period to
1 minute.

Then don't use it - you can use ANY Internet program alongside AOL
while connected, though sometimes it doesn't work too well and speed
can be dreadful, despite what you say.

Wait till next month before being too certain :)
Good luck with AO Hell, but imo you'd be better off with Freeserve and you'd
definately be better with ntl etc.

Do you have an ISDN line ? The maximum modem speed for a V.90 modem
is 52000. Sounds more like you don't have the correct modem drivers
installed !

Clara newsfeed was superb when I trialled them. I think they use SuperNews
but I may be out of date. NTL could be better but unless you're wanting a lot
of binary downloads you can always get a free account with news.cis.dfn.de
which is pretty good.

There is only one war, and it's not the rich against the poor,
the blacks against the whites, the Federation against the Borg,
or the Democrats versus the Republicans. It's those of us who
aren't complete idiots against those of us who are.
