Hi, Does BT Internet cancel your 0845 account if you do not use them to
connect to the internet? It must be about six months since I last used BT
Internet. I connect through Freeserve Anytime but still use my BT email
address. However I am now getting a message box to enter my user name and
password (they are already entered) I have to click cancel and then outlook
express displays a message that my password was rejected.

I suppose I will have to find all my BT Internet info and re enter it into
my computer as I now have a new hard disk as my old one had failed.

Now where are all these bits of paper?

Dave

I converted my BTI account to PAYG months ago, and haven't used the
0845 dial-up since. My BTI e-mail account still works just fine.

Have you checked the settings in your e-mail program to make sure
that your BTI user-name and password are correct, and that for
'sending' mail 'from' the BTI address you actually use the SMTP
('mail send') server of the ISP you've dialled in with? (I don't
think you can use the BTI SMTP server unless you've used a BTI dial-
up).

That's all I can think of.

According to BTO Openworld Support - for what seems like the first time in
living memory BTO have barred some email accounts in a clean up exercise -
call BTo Billing on 08702414567 (national rate) who can reactivate your
account..

It is worrying though, like you I have email accounts with them, they are
never "dialed" into.. still lets hope they dont do it again.

Sunil

They shouldn't.

But apparently, they have recently done so. There have been a few
complaints from people in btinternet.support, whose PAYG mailboxes
have been suspended, even though accessed every day.

In theory, that is only supposed to happen if the mailbox is not
accessed for 90 days, regardless of how you are connected when
accessing it.

The advice in support is to phone the billing line to get it restored.

Hi do you always assume that when ever someone's email address and password
are rejected that the settings are mysteriously changed? Do you imagine
that I have not checked them? I asked if BT Internet cancelled an 0845
account if you do not use them to connect to the internet? I also tried
accessing my account through Mailto web. No luck. Since posting the message
I tried to access my details through BT's web site. Account suspended.
Therefore BT suspend/cancel unused accounts.

no easy explanation (a typo when wiping out "heavy users" perhaps ?) but it
wasn't "obvious" to someone else trying their account that it had been just
deleted - they assumed wrong details/password change was affecting them; it
was a bounced mail message to their mail address that was conclusive about
the account being zapped.

I had been tempted to query whether the server was significant (you'd said
BT Internet but I thought they were going to change everything to use their
Openworld name ...[mail addresses, servers etc], so I had been wondering if
the settings might have made some difference - and no double checking would
fix it if they've put a server to answer at "mail.btinternet.com" but have
none of the existing userbase registered on it, so it would still report
authentication problems though the details should be OK).... my 2p :)
