ed2k and codec

episode 13 of Boston Public
It came in OK but it plays silently. The player searches for the codec and
then proceeds to play in without sound. I can find no way to tell what codec
it needs to play or if in just has no sound on the file.
Does anyone know how to solve this codec problem?

So much for ed2k guaranteed links. It seems rubbish files get included on these ed2k sites taking away any advantage they have over the traditional searching methods. I downloaded the file again to make sure a corruption did not occur in transfer. It is just the same.

You don't need to do anything with it as a rule. Just install the AC3 codec and try
playing with BSplayer or similar NOT WMP.
Anyway if all else fails i.e. you don't have a surround sound system then you need
to select AC3filter (Start > Programs) and in the MAIN menu ensure output is defined
as 2/0 Stereo. Mine is set to SP/DIF as I output the digital stream direct to an
external 5.1 decoder. If you have 5.1 speakers connected directly then select 3/2+SW
5.1
If you exclude OGG and MKV format then all you need is ffdshow (DivX/XviD) decoder,
DivX Audio decoder and AC3 decoder. That said as I said in another post some newer
XviD AVI's have been playing choppy and been advised to use XviD 1.0+, DivX Audio,
AC3 and the old DivX3 codec for those older AVI's as XviD 1.0+ doesn't support
DivX3.

Maybe it is a codec hiding where ever these codec's hide that the media
player downloaded on line that is causing the problem. If I knew how to
remove all the codec's so I could start with a fresh palette so to speak I
would, but as it is I am out of my depth here.
If you hear a scream echoing in the hills. It is just me venting my
frustation.
I better get some work done and come back to this problem tonight.

Okay... hard problem.. hard methods:
I had this problem some monts ago due to "experiments"
with codecs and shitprograms ... that's how I've fixed :D
I c you're using windows XP
start-->run %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
this will bring up the backup system configuration tool
(mine is not in english; so i can't be sure how is called :D)
the default option should be "restore a previous state" or
something; choose the other one (i guess is called "create
a restore point" or something ).
This will allow you to "play" with system configuration
without losing the current state; if you run into trouble
you can safely restore a previous state with this tool.
Then
Go to control panel --> add/remove programs
uninstall ANY divx, xvid, ffdshow, ac3, nimo, onlygodknowhowiscalled
audio/video codec you find, then
REBOOT THE COMPUTER
Install ONLY ffdshow from www.doom9.org
This should fix any upsidedown problem; and maybe it fix also
the "missed audio" problem.
For the future, when you have a trouble with unknown audio/video
codec, PRIOR to install any codec try to spot what is the right codec
using gspot or yaai.

You're running before you can walk. First you analyse the file with Gspot or
AVIcodec ... guess what ... each of them can tell you (1) Which audio/video codecs
you currently have installed (2) Which A/V codecs were used to create the problem
file. I remember this problem when I installed the Nimo Codec pack but there was a
fix within the package for upside/down video ... can't remember. I moved to using
ffdhow to reduce all the problems caused by the Nimo pack. If you use ffdshow then
open the config from Start > Programs > ffdshow > confuration and look for the item
miscellaneous and tick the FLIP VIDEO box.

The restore function had no earlier restore points because I had already
done that before posting my problem here, so I un installed all the codec's

could find Fortunately this XP is on fat32 so I booted to DOS and manually
removed the divx files the uninstall had not removed. I restarted XP and
cleared the
registry of any reference to ffdshow, divx and exdiv. I restarted again and
tried to play the upside-down movie and only heard sound. I tried to play
the silent
movie and got an error.
Then I installed ffdshow-20040718.exe (I could not see a download for it on
www.doom9.org so I searched with AltaVista and found it elsewhere)
I played the movie and SUCCESS the movie no longer plays upside down!

Unfortunately the silent one is still silent
I tried changing parameter in the ffdshow audio config, but it just made the
machine go into slow motion so I put it back to disabled as it was,
realising that could mess things up if I was not careful I stopped messing
with the settings.

A friend then walked in with his laptop so I plugged it into my router and
copied the silent episode to his laptop and it played with sound, so what I
need to do now is figure out how to transfer the codec setup he has onto my
PC, but as codec's seem to be a load of dll's and ax files and there is no
way I know of to tell what dll does what other then by it's name I am at a
loss.

but thanks anyway. I shall look for AVIcodec or gspot and use it to see if
there are any codec in there that I failed to remove. It may well help.

I tried getting the divx files from the laptop system32 folder and copying
them to this machine, but it made no difference. I guess some sort of
procedure is required before XP will recognise them.
This codec system is a farce. I have wasted a lot of hours trying to sort it
out. If I don't get it sorted soon I will just delete the
Boston_Public_-_1x13_-_Chapter_13.avi and forget it, because it seems the
only way I will get it to work is to format the drive and re install XP from
scratch which then means reinstalling the applications I use and spending a
long time getting everything back to normal. Hardly worth the trouble.
Maybe someone will share a copy that uses the same codec as the other
episodes that play just fine or better still an MPG instead of an AVI
I am now converting the ones that will play to MPG's as MPG's seem to play
without all these codec's. They may be larger files, but well worth the
extra space to make them reliable.

John have you tried Gspot or AVIcodec?
You seem to be spending hours hacking your system but don't use excellent freeware
tools to analyse the actual problem file. Just a suggestion. Good luck.
PS MPG sucks and converting AVI to MPG sucks more.

As for saying "MPG sucks" when it is AVI that has giving me all the problems
is not very convincing. I've never had a single mpg file that won't play on
any PC. I have on many occasions given up and deleted AVI's because they
won't play. This time I really tried to sort it out but still no go.
So as far as I can see it is AVI that sucks, so I will convert any I wish to
keep to MPG before writing them to CD so I know it will play well into the
future without having to search for some long lost codec.

It takes about 5 minutes to download and run Gspot (executable) or AVIcodec
(installer). They will correctly identify your system Codecs and the Codecs used to
encode a particular file!!
Ok I have maybe 500 AVI files and have problems with maybe 5 using ffdshow, DivX
Audio and recently AC3 filter (only because I have an AC3 surround system).
AVI is high quality high compression be it DivX or XviD whereas MPG is low quality
poor compression (This is a direct relationship comparing file size i.e. 700MB AVI
is comparable to 1400MB MPG or worse).
Comparing MPG with AVI is like comparing a Skoda with a BMW ... granted it's easier
to fix the Skoda but for quality and performance I'll have a BMW anyday.
As a final word may I suggest you try Media Player Classic which has built in Codecs

If you are unsure then look for the link that says Media Player Classic - MPC

I found Gspot. The name brought up a pile of references to porn of course
but I eventually found it.
It tells me I have the correct sound and video codec's installed. I can even
play it from its menu with the default player, but it is still silent unless
played with MPC.
I don't know why it won't use the installed codec and play the sound. Maybe
another codec is causing the problem. The answer would be a way to clear
every codec from the machine and start from scratch, but I have no idea how
to identify and remove codec files and have not found an application or
instructions to remove them on line.

list helps me sort out the reason why it plays silently despite having the

PS my friends laptop plays it fine, but converting in to an MPG failed so
there is something weird about the codec this file uses.

The list of Codecs installed SCREAMS to me Codec conflict!!
I have only ONE Video filter installed [that means no DivX, XivD, DX5, Div3 etc] and
as stated this is the ffdshow filter [I don't encode so it's not necessary to have
the codecs]. I think you have every know Codec installed on your system ... less is
more. If you clean install at some point and lets be honest that's what would be
needed IMO then may I suggest you try ffdshow and DivX Audio Codec ONLY first. That
means don't use Codec packs etc.
