Chinese New Year
The Black Sheep Of Chinese Capitalism
Mark Lewis, 01.31.03, 6:00 PM ET

Today is New Year's Eve for people who follow the Chinese zodiac, in which
the Year of the Horse is about to give way to the Year of the Sheep. People
born under this sign are said to be extremely lucky. But you could not prove
that by Li Haicang, who until last week ranked as the 27th richest man in
China. Li, a steel magnate, was one of 10 budding capitalists from our
China's 100 Richest list who were born during a Year of the Sheep. But Li was
gunned down in his Shanxi Province office last week by a man described in
news accounts as a failed businessman. The attacker then killed himself.

There is better luck ahead, presumably, for the other nine Sheep on our list.
One day, years from now, they may be joined on that list by someone born
during the year beginning Feb. 1, 2003. It's called the Year of the Black
Sheep, for reasons entirely unrelated to the English-language meaning of
"black sheep." Chinese astrologers believe that 2003 could be a transitional
year for many.

Some Westerners born during previous Sheep years also have done pretty well
for themselves. They include Bill Gates of Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news -
people ), Rupert Murdoch of News Corp. (nyse: NWS - news - people ), Steve
Jobs of Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) and Pierre Omidyar of
eBay (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ). Sheep are said to be romantic and
generous but sometimes a little negative. They are also subject to envy for
their success--as the unfortunate Li apparently found out last week.

Year 2003 is the year of the "Black" Sheep. The elemental energy is Water and
the color that corresponds with the Water element is black, hence-black
sheep. In general, the Year of the Sheep is slower, especially on the heel of
the up-and-down, go-go pace of the Horse Year. The first couple of months of
2003 will be heavy with Water energy; therefore, lookout for a wet first
quarter.

The elemental Water energy teaches us the virtue of patience,
understanding,
cooperation, support and nurturance. 2003 will bring our attention back to
family life, relationships and community. It's a time for reconciliation and
peace making. Cooperation -- even with rivals -- along with re-establishing
old contacts, will prove profitable. Increased global awareness of precarious
political and environmental situations will hopefully bring about more
peaceful and constructive solutions. Be aware, though, that the conflicts
carried over from 2002 will remain until the fall of 2003. Also because 2003
is considered a pivot year between two energy cycles, be prepared for
surprises from the Black Sheep! In other words, there is an element of
unpredictability.

2003 is a good year to expand in new directions, although one should not
expect immediate payoff. For energy placement, the northern and southern
portions of your house or workplace are filled with good energy. Focus your
efforts on humanities, charity, arts and health. Take care of others, and
yourself, everything else will follow.

Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and harmonious Year!

In the Chinese system, 2003 is the year of the Black Sheep, also
known as the Water Goat. It signals a time when love comes more
easily, even for those who have lost hope.

Gentle Goat will encourage a sense of celebration this year, we'll be feeling
festive and light-hearted, glad to be alive, and ready for love and loving.
Couples will find themselves reaffirming their vows to each other, soul mates
will find each other at long last. This is definitely the year to dream of
that amazing love affair - and then to act on it. Get out and socialize this
year, you'll be glad you did!

But, where last year we were wanting to get out and about, this year, we'll
be more interested in home and hearth and activitiesconnected with our homes
and communities. A great year for backyard bbq's and house parties!

Happy day! Most of us will have the money to do a little entertaining and
enjoy being in love. For 2003 should bring some relief also around our
personal financial stresses. Folks should find it easier to advance in their
professions, careers and businesses. A good year to look for that better job
you've been after. Be careful, though, there could be a terrible crash in the
stock market late in the summer or come fall, so be wise about your
investments, keep them close to home.

(To Be Alive is Power

To be alive—is Power—
Existence—in itself—
Without a further function—
Omnipotence—Enough—

To be alive—and Will!
'Tis able as a God—
The Maker—of Ourselves—be what—
Such being Finitude!
