Anti-war protests held around the globe
Last Updated Sun, 19 Jan 2003 0:41:14
TORONTO - Despite freezing temperatures, thousands of people
held rallies in cities across Canada Saturday to oppose a possible
war against Iraq.
Noisy anti-war protesters gathered in places like Montreal, Quebec
City, Windsor, Halifax, Ottawa and Toronto as part of an
international peace campaign. Similar demonstrations were held in
many communities around the world, including Washington.
[]
"If Iraq exported potatoes, I assure you we would not
be here today," said one woman in Toronto.
[]
Many of the protesters said while weapons of mass destruction is a
concern, killing people in a war is no way to deal with it.
In Ottawa, some protesters fell to the ground as they staged a
"die-in" to show what they say will be the real cost of war.
[]
In some communities close to the U.S., Canadians used different
means to send their message over the border. In Windsor,
protesters shouted across the river to Detroit. In New Brunswick,
people marched over a bridge for a rally in Maine.
[]
Buses brought people to the U.S. capital from as far
away as Wisconsin and California. About 75,000
people streamed into the National Mall in frigid
temperatures to demand that President George W.
Bush back away from any plans to topple the Iraqi
regime.
[]
Thousands of protesters marched through central Tokyo carrying
toy guns with flowers in their muzzles. They chanted and sang songs such
as John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance" while marching under banners
calling for peace.
In Moscow, hundreds of Russian peace demonstrators rallied
outside the U.S. embassy. They held signs calling for an end to U.S.
aggression and chanted "Yankee go home."
About 6,000 marched in Paris, the third major
demonstration in France since October.
[]
Rallies were held near London, in Goteborg,
Sweden, the German cities of Bonn and Cologne, and
Istanbul.
People hit the streets in the Middle East, as well, where not all the
messages were exactly calling for peace.
In Damascus, some demonstrators called out, "Our beloved
Saddam, strike Tel Aviv." During the Gulf War 12 years go, Iraq
launched dozens of Scud missiles at Tel Aviv.
Anti-war demonstrations were also held in Cairo and Beirut.

Thousands join global protests
against Iraq war
[]
In Montreal, several thousand demonstrators braved frigid temperatures
to wave placards and chant anti-war slogans.
Amir Khadir, who returned from a mission in Iraq last month with the
French organization Medecins du Monde (Doctors of the World), told the
Montreal demonstrators sanctions imposed since the Persian Gulf War a
decade ago are already costing Iraqi children their lives.
He said 4,200 Iraqi children under 5 years of age died in the month he
was there, so "we are already at war."
[]
In Washington, police said 30,000 marched through the streets, part of a
much larger crowd that packed the east end of the National Mall and
spilled onto the Capitol grounds.
"We stand here today, a new generation of anti-war activists," Peta
Lindsay from International Answer, the main organizers, exhorted the
spirited masses in a biting cold.
"This is just beginning. We will stop this war."
[]
At at least one demonstration - in Bologna, Italy - police fired tear
gas when the crowd got out of control. Some activists in a 2,000-strong
protest tried to break through a line of police who were blocking off a
small, unrelated demonstration by rightists. There were no arrests or
injuries, police said.
A few protests targeted bases of the British and U.S. military, which
are amassing troops in the Persian Gulf to prepare for possible war. In
one of several German protests, people sang "We shall overcome" outside
the U.S. army Europe headquarters in Heidelberg. Near London, about 200
people demonstrated outside the barbed wire fence of the armed forces'
Permanent Joint Headquarters.
Police in the Netherlands detained 90 activists who tried to enter
Volkel Air Force Base, where Dutch and U.S. forces are stationed, to
conduct a "citizens' inspection of American nuclear arms."
In Istanbul, communist protesters took their anger out on another
symbol of British and American influence: They staged a protest outside
a theatre showing the latest James Bond movie.
In the Middle East, a march in Cairo drew 1,000 people, while some of
the 4,000 protesters in Beirut brandished posters showing Saddam.
Not all protesters were pushing for peace: In the Syrian capital,
Damascus, some people shouted: "Our beloved Saddam, strike Tel Aviv," a
refrain from the 1991 Gulf War.
In Hyderabad, India, communist workers burned the effigy of Bush, while
police stopped about 200 protesters from marching on the U.S. Consulate
in Lahore, Pakistan.
Thousands protested in Tokyo's glitzy Ginza shopping district,
including a group of students wearing Bush face masks and toting toy
guns filled with flowers. Some Japanese demonstrators played island folk
songs on traditional string instruments from Okinawa - home to more than
half of the 47,000 U.S. troops in Japan.
In Hong Kong, about 60 people chanted "Inspections, yes! War, no!" and
"Yankee, go home!" as they marched through the financial district to the
U.S. and British consulates.
--------------------
[]
"Mr. Bush hung Dr. King's picture up in the White House last year
but he need to hang up Dr. King's words," said the Reverend Al
Sharpton, a Democratic presidential candidate.
As with any big Washington rally, the main cause made room for
other causes. "Free Palestine" was one of them. Racism and genocide were
others
[]
More than 400 New Zealanders demonstrated in Christchurch. In Moscow, a
few hundred people agitated outside the U.S. Embassy in a protest
organized by a branch of the Communist Party. People turned their backs
to the building, and signs called the United States a "Global Cannibal."

[]
Massive protests were also held in London, Birmingham, Manchester and
Nottingham.
[]
The Canadian anti-war movement turned out in full force, with thousands
gathering in Victoria, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax, and
other
cities. In Toronto, more than 15,000 people packed the area in front of
city hall
demanding that the federal government not support a U.S.-led attack
[]
Along with the dozens of protests, a white arm band campaign is emerging
in Canada. While the idea has been used by the peace movement before,
this time it is being networked across Canada in protest of war in
Iraq.
The U.S. expects to have more than 100,000 troops in the Gulf region by
the
end of the month and may boosts its presence to near 200,000 troops in
February.
UN weapons inspectors have been searching in Iraq for weapons of mass
destruction for the past eight weeks. So far they have not found any
signs of
the banned weapons that the Bush administration claims Iraq possesses.

Anti-war demonstrators rally around the world
Organizers put turnout in Washington at 200,000
Saturday, January 18, 2003 Posted: 11:09 PM EST (0409 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) --Americans across the nation publicly protested
a possible war in Iraq on Saturday.
In Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, California, at the two largest
peace
rallies, the crowds were urged on by international peace activists,
religious leaders, members of Congress, actors and musicians.
At least tens of thousands of people rallied on the Mall in Washington,
and a
similar-size group crowded downtown San Francisco.
[]
The rally is one of dozens organized in 25 countries by the group Act
Now to
Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER). The group said it had organized
transportation from more than 200 cities in 45 states for the rallies in
Washington and San Francisco. Organizers estimated the crowd at about
200,000. Washington park police would not offer an estimate.
[]
In Rawalpindi, Pakistan, people -- many of them youths -- joined hands
along a street and held signs opposing war.
[]
ANSWER is planning a week of anti-war demonstrations beginning February
13. The group is calling for actions supporting protests in Europe on
February 15, and for protests -- including walk-outs by U.S. college and
high
school students -- February 21 to coincide with the anniversary of the
assassination of Malcolm X.

Global protests against Iraq
war
Marchers in San Francisco lend their
voice to protests
A day of worldwide protests against a
looming US-led
war on Iraq has culminated in giant peace
rallies in
Washington, San Francisco and other US
cities.
More than 50,000 Americans converged on
the National
Mall in the centre of Washington, in one
of the biggest
protests since the build-up for war
began.
The most popular chant
was "No War For Oil".
The crowds carried
placards saying "Regime
Change Starts at Home"
and "Would Jesus Bomb
Them?"
In San Francisco, a
group of nude women
called for President
George W Bush to rein in
his "naked aggression"
against Iraq.
Anti-war demonstrations
spanned the world on
Saturday, including
rallies in Japan, Pakistan,
Syria, Egypt, Russia, France, Britain,
Argentina
and Mexico.
[]
As many as 50,000
people are expected to
attend a peace rally in
San Francisco, including
actor Martin Sheen.
US protest organisers
want to generate the
kind of opposition that
was expressed against
the Vietnam War 30
years ago.
One of them,
Washington lawyer
Mara
Verheyden-Hilliard,
said: "Bush has said he intends to launch
a
pre-emptive war, and now he's facing the
most
formidable obstacle, which is a
pre-emptive
anti-war movement".
In San Francisco, environmental and trade
union
activists, Hollywood stars, anarchists
and military
veterans marhced to show opposition to
military
action against Iraq.
"I'm hoping that the bus loads of people
coming
as far away as Oregon and Nevada give an
indication that this isn't just the crazy
loons in
San Francisco - but we reflect the
opinions of the
entire United States," said Tim Kingston
of the
anti-war group Global Exchange.
[]
In Germany, peace protesters marched
through the cities of Rostock
and
Tuebingen
[]
Hundreds of schoolchildren joined
protesters in the Pakistani
capital
Islamabad to try to form a
human chain to
Rawalpindi, 10 kilometres (six
miles) away
