Hi,
I recently did some research on Voyager 1 that was launched on
08-20-77. This is the farthest from earth man made object, over 11 Billion
miles! It takes a radio signal about 17 hours to travel from Voyager 1 to
earth!
Some information I have found on the web, it's computer system
has 68KB of memory. Back in 1977, that seemed like a lot of memory.
Voyager 1 has 3 radioisotope thermoelectric generators that currently
is producing about 315 watts of electric power.
I thought of two techniques for determining the distance Voyager 1
is from earth, but I have not confirmed if one of these methods is
actually used by NASA.
Does anyone know Voyager 1's transmit power, the power used to transmit
a signal back to earth? Of course, it must be less than 315 watts.
Thank You in advance, John N3AOF
PS, I will tell you about the two techniques I thought of to determine
Voyager 1's distance at a later date.
