I read this article and thought us moms would get a big charge out of it.
I dunno, but I had always suspected Bert & Ernie, but never a 6 year old
Big Bird. lol

WARNING TO CONGRESS

The truth about SpongeBob burst into the open last week. The Rev. James
Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, an influential purveyor of
conservative Christian doctrine, warned members of Congress that the
seemingly innocuous sponge boy was conspiring with other popular cartoon
figures to peddle a homosexual agenda.

After Dobson outed SpongeBob, the Mississippi-based American Family
Association, a relentless critic of television immorality, leaped into the
fray, naming more names in the conspiracy to ''normalized homosexuality'':
Big Bird. Arthur. Clifford the Big Red Dog. Rugrats. All the usual
suspects.

Of course, it was pretty obvious what's going on with Bob the Builder. And
I've always been suspicious of Barney. I mean what the hell is this
purple-clad pervert doing hanging out in a playground with small children
with whom he has no familial association?

These icons of TV Americana, Dobson and the AFA warn, are featured in the
video remake of the old hit We Are Family. Some 61,000 copies of the
musical DVD will be distributed in March to public and private elementary
schools across the nation by the We Are Family Foundation, dedicated to
''the message of diversity and tolerance.'' And you know what that means.

But it was the revelation about SpongeBob's role in the
diversity-tolerance conspiracy that shocked me. I had sat there
unwittingly, day after day, watching Nick while my subconscious was
bombarded with secret subliminal messages designed to pervert my
sexuality. Now, I don't feel gay, exactly. I still can't abide Barbra
Streisand. I'd rather cruise with Penelope than Tom. But I have noticed
that women no longer find me nearly as alluring as I think they should. Do
they sense something soggy and spongy about my inner being? Do these pants
look a little square on a guy my age?

TINKY WINKY'S TROUBLE

In 1999, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, thank God, saved us all from an earlier
insidious homosexual conversion campaign when he revealed the truth about
Tinky Winky, the cross-dressing Teletubby on Public Television, fond of a
purple coat accessorized with a red vinyl purse. Other watchful guardians,
mindful of secret gay agendas, note a troubling relationship between Bert
and Ernie down on that wretchedly diversified boulevard known as Sesame
Street.

The American Family Association has its hands full fending off the
homosexual political agenda. The AFA website is whipping up a boycott
against Procter & Gamble's toothpaste, detergent and disposable diaper
labels because of the company's perceived sympathy for gay rights. The
beleaguered company has tussled for years with the religious fringe. In
1991, P&G had to abandon the company's 140-year-old trademark to fend off
rumors that the quarter moon and 13 stars represented a tribute to
satanism.

Lately, the political meddlers from the far religious right feel downright
empowered -- that ain't no Tinky Winky they put in the White House. Bikini
Bottom is about to join Iran and North Korea in the axis of evil.

LOL. Rayna is very into "Little Bear" (on Noggin) right now, and we always
wonder if Little Bear and his friend Emily (a little girl) have something
going, since there seems to be a strong chemistry between them.

I love Dr. Dobson, but this is way out of left field!

Everyone knows SpongeBob has a crush on Sandy Cheeks, the squirrel!!

I've seen pretty much every episode, and the only one I can think of
that this might apply to is the one where SpongeBob and Patrick adopt
a baby mussel, and SpongeBob becomes the stereotypical 'wife' and
Patrick the stereotypical 'husband' in the way they relate to the baby.
("Rock-a-Bye Bivalve")

In one scene SpongeBob is in curlers, a housedress and slippers (IIRC)
and blasts Patrick (in a rumpled business suit) for not helping more
around the house--he keeps promising and promising but 'eventually'
never arrives and SpongeBob just keeps getting more and more worn down.
The graphics are really funny, no sexual innuendo, just the role playing
that really hits home especially if you've been a mom who doesn't get
much help from dad. :-)

Quotes:
Patrick: I wanna be the mom!
SpongeBob: No, you can't be the mom because you never wear a shirt.
Patrick: You're right. If I were a mom, this would be kind of shocking.

:-)

I'm not sure how that is 'promoting the gay agenda' but I guess if you
look at it sideways and in just the right light (kinda like checking an
hpt) you *might* see that. YMMV.

Carolyne:

They are referring to a video that is coming out in March, not any of the
current episodes. I know this because Simon adores Spongebob.

I too love Dr. Dobson and without seeing the video they are referring to, I
can't comment on whether they are coming out of left field or not.

Attention media! Please save us time and reveal now what skeletons Mr.
Dobson has in his closet that his moralistic ways currently belie. Is he
banging a prostitute? Is he embezzling funds? Is he a high roller in
Vegas? Out with it, please.

I wasn't bashing conservatives; I was commenting on the absurdity of a
radical extremist's POV. Anyone who preaches hate and bigotry (e.g.,
homosexuality somehow being "wrong") is an extremist, any way you slice it.
I do not view all conservatives as being this way.

BTW, there are "nut jobs" on both sides of the fence--left-wing and
right-wing.

The video can be found on this page: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6852828/
Scroll down to the picture of SpongeBob and launch the video.
I really don't see how anyone can think homosexuality is being promoted.
The video and the foundation, are out to promote tolerance. Their tolerance
pledge does include "sexual identity" in addition to "abilities, beliefs,
culture, race" Is that really so awful? Here is the group's website:

Thanks, Kelly! I watched the video and I didn't see anything in it--
maybe Dr. Dobson et al are referring to the 8 page teacher guide that
goes with it.

What i understand about the tape (what i have heard anyhow) is that it's
a tape to make people aware that there are different kinds of families.
Not every child in America has a mommy and a daddy per se. They may
have two mommies, or an aunt and uncle may be raising them etc....this
is what i understood about it. It's just a social awareness tape. I
have also heard its about racial acceptance etc...

Jerry Falwell said a couple of years ago about TInky winky being Gay
because he had a purse and often wore a tutu. This is a normal part of
development in children. "Cross" dressing if you will boys play with
girl clothes and girls wear daddy's shoes it doesnt make them gay
etc...." ITs also called dress up! We have this center at our daycare
in all of our classrooms.

Hey also took exception to the fact that Tinky has a tiangle on his
