Humanity's a bit far from this yet, but it -is- an idea to consider. I
mean, you'd be technologically capable of it even now, it would just
be a bit of an adjustment. But many species find it useful to craft
their technology so that all those little devices they use are powered
by them as needed - i.e., literally by their bodies. Humans can do any
number of things to enable their bodies to interface with
technological devices and provide power to them. A common theme is to
install a sort of "gland" - a synthetic gland with the fluids & other
components needed to produce electricity, with perhaps just one small
element missing that would be provided directly from the individual's
body. Something in your sweat, perhaps. It wouldn't even need to
involve holes, you can install instead contact pads in your skin which
would be covered up - perhaps by another flap of skin engineered for
the purpose. Move it when you need to use a device, let your contact
pads touch the contact pads of the device in question, power it up
while you need it and then it shuts off by default when you're
finished. You'd never have to worry about recharging your cell phone
batteries, you'd just have to make sure that your synthetic "gland"
has enough juice to last you and that you've eaten properly that day.
Integrating biology & technology is one of the very first things a
burgeoning technorati civilization delves into. Having your technology
become self-powered (as in by YOURselves, not "its-self") requires
precisely the kinds of research and development that will teach you
much about the integration of consciousness and technology for things
such as virtual reality, real-time "databurst" learning (my own phrase
for the kind of learning in which an entire set of knowledge and
experience is downloaded into your brain at once without you ever
having to have experienced it yourself) and the like.
Getting the exchange of energy just right is one of the key factors in
determining just how your minds and the rest of your neurology can be
factored in with your technology. You don't even have to do it with
that thought in mind, the things you will learn from the attempt will
be useful to you in these other areas regardless.
Just a thought. As always, the choice is yours. :-)
