Go go to www.deja.com and search around old postings, many links have been
posted for all sorts of things.

The UIN number is not the only factor that drives people to steal accounts.
Why does anyone steal in the first place? Because they do.

Just for the info Deja was long taken over by Google.com, and is
http://groups.google.com

Yep, there are clinical disorders that lead people to do this
hibitchially(sp?).

I'm well aware of that. But www.deja.com still works fine, and is easier to
remember and type in.

Really? "Google" is only 2 chatacters longer then "deja"...

Well, the better reason not to give out a link to deja is that it may
not aleways be there. Google has been kind enough to keep that demain
name around linking to it's groups.google.com for this long, but there
is no guarntee it will be there. Os if someone bookmarks www.deja.com
and Google finially decies to kill it if ever, then the person will be
stuck with a stinkin 404. I guess it wont be too big a problem sicne you
get redirected to google's ng archive, but it still be wiser to give out
thel ink to groups.google.com ;p

... and "groups" is 3 additional characters than "www" as well.

Let's not forget my other point - "www.deja.com" is slightly easier to type
and remember than "groups.google.com" is.

That's like saying "never give out yahoo links, because someday Yahoo may
get bought out and won't exist anymore".

> Google has been kind enough to keep that demain

And they're continuing to do so. Deja's domain registration was just
updated again the other day.

> but there is no guarntee it will be there.

There's no guarantee that yahoo.com will be around forever. Or that
microsoft.com will always be around. Or that makeashorterlink.com will
always be around. Or every other joesmoe.com address on the internet, for
that matter. As long as an address still exists, it's still valid to post
links to it, until the actual day that it actually dies, or until the
company announces ahead of time that it is going to die soon.

In such cases, the person is most likely using old links to begin with, and
should expect the 404 eventually. If it is links to commonly used material,
then chances are that there are always newer links to the same material
floating around already. That's just the nature of the internet. Addresses
get shifted around all the time, material moves from server to server, etc.

Um Remy, Deya WAS bought out, Google simply left the LINK, but they
could pull that link at ANY time. That is my point. Yahoo is still a
(strong) entity that wont be going anywhere in the distant future. As
one of the largest websites out there (with their numerous divisions), I
seriously doubt thre is much comparison between it and yahoo.com. Deja
is just an alias to groups.google.com, and it's a domain name that may
easily (for the guys at Google) be pulled.

Actually, not at ANY time, unless they're willing to pay extra for it.
Deja.com is a domain like any other, even if it simply redirects elsewhere.
But that's a server feature, not a registration feature. The registration
itself still costs money, and as I mentioned, they just renewed the domain.
Which means that deja.com is good for at least another year.
