We're considering replacing a furnace and a/c system. From all that I've read the caliber of the installation crew is of great importance. What I'm struggling with is determining how to choose a company with good installers. I've tried talking to neighbors but have concluded that unless that neighbor has some hvac expertise it's not clear how useful their input on the install is. So what does one do? Any insights on how to pick a company which would result in a quality install would be welcomed!

Adding to the confusion is that most companies appear to deal with a particular brand that they push - I suspect they get volume discounts the more units they sell. And each salesperson, naturally, tells you why that particular brand is better than the rest. Once upon a time there were distinct tiers of manufacturers but these days, with mergers and acquisitions, things are a lot more confusing - at times it can be the same unit with a different badge when the parent company is the same. It almost seems that if can find a company I'm comfortable with I should just go with their recommended brand as that's what their installers are probably the most familiar with.

Thoughts?

You need to do a little bit of homework before choosing an HVAC company. Seek referrals from your friends or neighbors.
Look into the professional standards of the HVAC company.
Request a printed quotation or price estimate.
Read online reviews of the company.
Read all the terms and conditions of their warranty service.
At last, Don't forget to check if the company is having a good reputation for its after-sales service for its customers.

I understand you're trying to find the right company for a quality furnace and A/C system installation. Finding a reputable and experienced HVAC company can be a challenge, especially with so many different options available. But don't worry, I've got some tips to help you find the best one.

Here are a few suggestions to help you choose a good company:

+ Check their license and insurance: A licensed and insured HVAC contractor is a good sign that they take their business seriously and are committed to doing quality work.
+ Look for online reviews: Read what other people are saying about the company on websites like Yelp, Google, and Angie's List. Make sure to read a variety of reviews to get a well-rounded understanding of their services.
+ Ask for referrals: Talk to friends, family, and neighbors to see if they have any recommendations for HVAC contractors. They may have had a great experience with a company and can give you valuable insights.
+ Schedule consultations: Set up consultations with a few different companies to get a sense of their expertise, professionalism, and communication style. Ask specific questions about their installation process and see how they respond.
+ Consider their warranty: Make sure you understand what kind of warranty the company offers on their installations. A good warranty can give you peace of mind and protection in case anything goes wrong with your new system.

In terms of brand, it's understandable that companies may push a particular brand, as you mentioned. However, I think it's more important to choose a company that has experience and a good reputation for quality installations, regardless of the brand they recommend. If you find a company you're comfortable with, you can feel confident that their recommended brand is likely a good choice, as their installers will be familiar with it.
