Rheem Criterion II motor won't start

I have a Rheem Criterion II furnace that the motor will not start
without me shoving it in the right direction. I replaced the motor and
capacitor ($175) and found the same result. I tried to start the motor
outside the furnace with an extension chord. I found the same result:
motor will hum until I shove it in the right direction! Help!

You have a bad recoil spring.

This is Turtle

Your Wiring something up wrong or you may have burnt the new motor up already
and also I can't see it from here.

Now the first cause you spoke of motor not starting and you have to start it by
hand can be caused by a bad capasitor or a burn start winding.

Well there's the problem right there. When you extend a chord your
fingers can get twisted in a knot on the fret board. After that anything
you touch will turn out on a bad note.

Many of the new motors are built very poorly today. You will see many
bad new motors right out of the box. Try a few more motors before you
give up. Also, try a larger motor capacitor. Usually double to triple
the microfared rating will get a slow starting motor going again.
Lastly, try using 220volts to get the motor going. Anymore, regular ol
110v is just too outdated and weak for motor starting. The electrons
in the motor just dont get excited enough to get it turning. Thus, you
have to give the motor a shove.

Thermostat broken? Spend $5000 on a new AC unit. Low on oil fuel?
Obviously your furnace needs to be replaced?

You AC uses electricity? Replace the elctrical panel.

What a bunch of con artists.

Sounds like skinned wiring which can cause a fire and the rattling is
the wiring arcing.
You have demonstrated you don't know how to use a meter or even what to
look for.
That puts you in the dangerous retard column.

Call someone while you still can. You're too damn dense to do it.

Is the motor you bought reversable? Its possible you just dont have
the rotation set correctly.

I am really confused. No comments from the pnut gallery please. I thought
we were talking about a compressor. Why would we have a furnace hooked to a
50A breaker, and how do you hook up a hardstart kit to a blower motor. Am I
really that far gone. Pain meds are gonna have to take a break.

As a platoon sgt in the combat arms MOS (infantry/special weapons) I
ran across a guy who although being one of the nicest guys you'd ever want
to meet (give ya the shirt off his back), was completely un trainable (Gomer

given up on him. I lost the bet and nearly lost my mind trying to teach him

It's not politically correct to call him 'retarded'. Besides,
I've known 'retarded' folk that were smarter. At least THEY knew
enough to take advice from experts.

Let's just call him 'simple' :-)

Yep - Stormy is 'simple, no lie.

You obviously failed in teaching him target practice.

"OK, Goober, time for target practice. Go stand down-range
and be real still .... no, no, no, the OTHER 'down range'......."
