What advantages does a scroll compressor provide?
How much of a premium should I pay for a Trane A/C over a similar Carrier?
10 SEER standard unit: TTB060
10 SEER deluxe unit: TTR060
11 SEER deluxe unit: TTN060
12 SEER deluxe unit: TTP060
12 SEER top unit: TTX060
There is a 14 SEER single speed and 16-18 SEER 2 speed unit.
> What advantages does a scroll compressor provide?
Drastically fewer moving parts, much quieter than recips. I'm told
Trane is now using their own scroll in 10 SEER 5 ton A/C units. The old
Climatuff, however, is a superb compressor. Many components are superior
to the generic recips of the big 3.
> How much of a premium should I pay for a Trane A/C over a similar Carrier?
There may be a few bucks over the good line Carriers. Probably $200+
more
than the builder cubes. I'd pay it! Overall, 10 SEER 5 ton installed
in the $2500-3000 range.

John, do you mean the XL14? I think it's more like a 12.5 or 13 SEER.
I asked my Trane salesman once "where are the SEER ratings for the
XL14?". He told me they were in the ARI manual. I thought "That's
interesting. Why not put them in your brochures?" Now I know why.
Very few of the XL14 matchups even come close to 14 SEER. Most are in
the 12 and low 13 range. I don't think many Trane salesmen even know
that.

That's the trouble with Trane. The XL1800 is the most misleading. At
least
when American-Standard came out with the same model, they called it
the Allegiance 16 which is about what it is.
The only way to get about 12 SEER with Trane is have a variable speed
indoor unit.
I just installed a TTX024 with a TWE031E and got a 14 SEER rating out of
it.

I need a customer like that. MONEY NO OBJECT!!! <g>
With me I get people who won't spend for a TTB with ADP coil! They want
one of Neutrodyne's Janijunks reusing a 30 year old coil!

Ok Bob, I see how they are doing it. You matched that "XL12" with an
air handler and got 14.0. You are correct.
And to get 14 out of an XL14, you need to use an air handler. For
example, at the 2 ton size, the highest you can get with an evaporator
is 13.35 (and that's with a 3 ton evap). Otherwise, most of the
matchups are in the 12 and under range.
I'm not a Trane Dealer, but as I look at these matchups, I'm confused.
I don't know which evaps you guys commonly use, so I just picked one,
the TXC031D4. The XL12 gets 11.4 SEER. The XL14 gets 11.8 SEER.
That's not much of a jump. "Where's the beef?"

One problem with Trane is they list each unit with every coil where most
brands only list 12 SEER matches. For example, Carrier's TRA comes with
a liquid line solenoid that has to be installed and some matches still
don't make 12 SEER. Others require a TXV and a blower time delay relay
plus the LLS. Arcoaire's AJ series requires a TXV be added to get 12
SEER.
Rheem's RANB is only listed in the directory with matching TXV coil.
It's
pretty stupid of Trane to show a 14 SEER outdoor unit with a low end
piston coil BUT, there are idiot dealers out there that don't know
better
and suppliers that sell them what they order so at least this way, it
is known what they are selling even if they misrepresent it to the
homeowner.
There are some brands that can go 14 SEER with just a coil. Amana,
Coleman, Lennox, York. Goodman shows a couple that do but if you put a
5 ton coil on a 2.5 ton outdoor unit. Good latent capacity that way!
It's a game!

Match a 2.5 ton Lennox Elite 14 with a C26-41 (3 ton TXV) and you
actually get 14.0 SEER! 3/8, 3/4 lineset. No variable speed air
handler. No funny games. No smoke and mirrors.
WHERE'S THAT TRANE DISTRIBUTOR FROM COLORADO?
At least Janitrol can get 14 with their 14.
Just blowing off a little steam.
