411 is about a 3 ton. Gotta know Lennox's code!

This is turtle.

Well back 20 something years ago when your HS8-411-10FFA was made it
was call a basic 3 ton and by changing the coil that went with it . It
can be used as a 3.5 ton.

During this period of time Lennox did not make but one model for 3 ton
and 3.5 ton. They used this as both. You can put a CC-41-0 evaperator
coil on it and it was a 3 ton . Then you could put a CC-51-0 evaperator
coil on it and you would have a 3.5 ton system.

So what I'm saing is by put a 3 or 3.5 ton evaperator coil on it you
can use it as both types applications.

If i was going to match a new furnace and evaperator coil on it now
days . I would hook a 3.5 ton furnace and evaperator coil on it to get
the max. effiency out of it. Now you can just hook a 3 ton coil to it
and get a super dehydrator 3.0 ton.

How do you tell what it is ?

HS8-211 ------ 1.5 TON
HS8-311 ------ 2TON
HS8-411 ------ 3 TON
HS8-511 ------ 4 TON
HS8-611 ------ 5 TON

During this period they did not make 1/2 Tons and just change the coil
to make half tons.

what about the HS8-461, 3.5 ton

From what I have read it is actually BTU

261=26,000
311=31,000
411=41,000
461=46,000
etc

Lennox was conservative with the way they sized units. What was called a
three ton, was actually a bit more.

the last number "1" was to signify the phase, being HS8-413 was a three
phase unit

Actually, the model # does not mean "btu's". Here's how it goes:

-211 1.5 tons
-261 2 tons
-311 2.5 tons
-411 3 tons
-461 3.5 tons
-511 4 tons
-651 5 tons

That may have been the case back in the 60s with the HS6 & HS8 but
looking at ARI ratings for the HS9 in 1977, the oldest book I have, that
wasn't anymore. The HS9-411 ran from 34,000 to 36,000. The 461 ran from
38,000-42,000.

Never seen a 611. The 5 ton has always been the 651 until the recent
change to industry standard.

This is turtle.

I'm Not all that clear on them but what I remember is from installing
them in the 1960's. We was told buy the Lennox supplier that we don't
carry anything but HS8-211 , 311, 411 , 511 , 611 and if you want 1/2
sizes change coil to add 1/2 ton size to unit. They may have made the
1/2 sizes but you buy what the supplier supplies and do your job.

One Question here , I see all the number above that you stated but i
don't see a 3 ton some wheres among them. I see 2 ton , 2.5 ton , 3.5
ton , and a 4 ton . I need to know what a 3 ton number is.

One more if a HS8-411 is rated by your reading as 41,000 btu's , i
would call that a 3.5 ton. Also by your rating here the HS8-461 with
46,000 btu's , I would call that a 4 ton. Remember the old chart.

18,000 btu = 1.5 ton
24,000 btu = 2 ton
30,000 btu = 2.5 tons
36,000 btu = 3 tons
42,000 btu = 3.5 tons
48,000 btu = 4 tons
60,000 btu = 5 tons.

The way I always remembered Lennox was to look at the model # & go to
the next lower ton or 1/2 ton increment to get the size.
So I come up with the same numbers.
261= 26,000 the next lower would be 2 ton / 24,000 btu's
311= 31,000 ..................................... 2 1/2 / 30,000 btu's
etc...

This is TUT-HUT .

That HS8-411 is electric hog and a 1 seer rating. With that you can
load it's ass down and it will take it. I have seen them hooked to a 4
ton air handler and do a good job , but it did make strange noises all
the time and sometimes sounded like HELP ME HELP ME HELP ME .

You know I think it was 651 or something. I don't know I sleep since
then.

Sorry Don, I don't know how that slipped in there, I was actually asking
Tut-hut how he saw it happening that a smaller coil meant increased
dehydration. I'm not saying he's wrong or right, just wondering how he or
anyone else might try quantify this?

But, hell, while we're on the topic, if you need some good second hand centrifs

This is turtle.

You know I said I didn't know about it being a 611 . Well I seen a HP21-
611-3P today. So in the 4 or 5 years ago class they did have the 611
type.
