Any pro's or cons? A Heil 3.5ton 11 seer a/c is about $800 less than Trane
12 seer. Warranty on the Heil is only 5yrs vs. 10yrs on Trane.

There are differences in Trane and Heil. I frankly expect the Trane to be
more than $800 higher than Heil. The Heil 11 SEER is a 10 SEER condenser
with properly matched evap coil to acheive the 11 SEER rating.

Seek a comparable qoute for a 14 SEER Heil vs. the 14 SEER Trane and you'll
be comparing apples to apples in SEER, but there are still differences in
unit design, coil style, compressor etc.... ask your salesperson for
details.

IMO if you are willing to go the extra for 12, go 14 SEER and realize some
payback over the life of the equipment.

Both are excellent equipment.

I don't know if you have two different dealers giving bids or one
contractor selling both so I will try to give an opinion that applies
to either.
I would suggest you shop contractors over equiptment first. It has been
stated time and again that the equiptment is only as good as the
installation. If installed properly, both are good systems. You
mentioned warranty. Warranty is very important. Were you quoted parts
only for 5 and 10 years or were you quoted parts and labor? If you get
10 years parts and labor as well as one seer rating higher perhaps the
Trane unit is the way to go.
All things being equal(i.e. warranty, installation,tonnage,seer...)
most units are on a level playing field. There are but few
manufacturers who build truly "cheap" equiptment that is prone to
premature failure and any poor installation can demote any piece of
equiptment into this category. Some manufacturers try to stay on the
cutting edge of technology, research and development and I regard the
Trane/American Standard company as one of them. Their equiptment is run
tested before it leaves the factory and goes thru numerous inspections
before it gets to your house. If you buy Trane you are getting Quality
no doubt. Heil has made great strides in improvement in recent years.
They have separated themselves from the bottom of the line equiptment
and are trying to reach the upper eschelon of equiptment manufacturers.
They are a division of ICP which was recently bought by Carrier, you
have certainly heard of them. Again, installed properly Heil is a good
piece of equiptment.
Hope I have helped in some way. Good luck to you in your quest for home
comfort.

You are not doing an apples to apple comparison between the 11 and 12
seer but as I am a tech rep for both brands, I believe that both are
good quality units. As you might see, the Trane has better coil
protection and a unique condenser coil design which is better suited
for the extremely hot climates, the ocean areas and where there is
much coil fouling dirt and seed fuzz. Both are reliable. Both
outsource relays and capacitors. Trane makes their own compressors
and Heil/ICP uses mostly Copeland. I tech rep Copeland too and they
are good. Both, when properly sized and properly installed in a good
distribution system, will cool your home well.

My suggestion is to compare the dealers and select the one with a
proven reputation.

Obviosly your sales people are not furnishing you with the proper literature
or you would know that there is a huge difference in more than price. An
AMERICAN STANDARD dealer..

Not sure what you are trying to say; but are you suggesting that an 11 SEER
obtained using a 10 SEER OD w/ the proper ID match to give 11 SEER is not the
same efficiency as an 11 SEER OD w/ properly matched ID??
