Tuba-like noise from Reems heat pump!

I have a 3 1/2 ton Reems heat pump. In the heating mode only, the
system makes a horrible loud tuba-like sound about 10 seconds AFTER it
shuts off. The sound is kind of like the sound you might hear when
water pipes vibrate in an apartment building.

2 different companies have looked at it. Sound is definitely not
coming from compressor. Cause seems to be some sort of restriction.
Tried purging the system with no luck. Again, the sound only occurs
in heating, not cooling, mode.

Last guy here says next step is to replace the coils, a $2500 job he
said. Any other ideas or opinions?

I'm in Palm Springs, CA.

At $2500, I'd check into seeing what a complete NEW system would run.

Remember, the new system is going to have a warranty.
Are they going to gaurantee that replacing the coils are going to fix the
problem?
(I'd say NOT likely)

Call another company to resolve the issues, someone that is not just
guessing.

Yeh, those Rhems tend to do that ( G, D, & R ) :-)

But seriously - that's most likely the reversing valve, possibly a
check valve, and even if it's all 3 ( 1 RV, 2 CV's ), it's nowhere
near $ 2,500 to replace them. More like 20 - 30 % of that.

As the unit shuts off, the reversing valve relaxes ( changes position
) , and it's expected to hear a sudden 'Whoosh'. Your 'tuba' noise is
something vibrating aginst a sudden change in pressures, and not
opening all the way, causing an effect much like the mouthpiece on a
tuba. This may also happen during defrost cycles, although the
dynamics of the pressure change are different because the unit is
still running and pumping.

Changing the coil will accomplish nothing, and will not affect the
noise.

Well...sinse you don't say what the model#, is or how old it is, or how long
it's been doing it it's hard to say. It sounds like gas is leaking past the
Reversing Valve seals and just like a reeded instrument the blown or leaking
seal(s) would make a sound till the pressures equalized, or it could
possibly be some trash caught in a check valve or it could be a weak spring
in the check.

But sinse Rheem energizes the RVS for heat from the "B" terminal on the
Tstat, B is always hot in normal heat mode wheather there's a call or not
you could try a little experiment to see if you have a bad reversing valve
seals. Fire the system uup and allow it to operate a good 10 mins (if it's
really cold outside make it 15), and switch the stat to the "Off" position
which will deenergize the solenoid allowing the valve to swing over to it's
cooling or at rest position. If the sound disappears or is greatly reduced
either in intensity or longevity then the odds are it is a bad RV.

Had one like that a year ago. Had a liquid line solenoid installed (at
the indoor unit for pump-down) and it was hum LOUD for about 30 seconds.

$2500 coil replacement??

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Did the guy that quote that wear a cape, carry a plunger, and call
himself "Super Plumber"????

This statement is like walking into a car parts house and saying "My car is
making a wierd noise, whats wrong with it??"
Got a model number?? and serial number??

without actually hearing the sound and laying hands on the system, there is
no way to diagnose the problem(s) over the internet.
Don't get me wrong, I *do* have a pretty good idea of what is happening and
why.
The 1st question I have is how long has the system been making the noise??

2 different companies??
Lowest bidders??
"purging the system" as it refrigerent system?????

Are you gonna get kissed after you get loaded like a shot gun??

Call your local air conditioning wholesale supply that handles Rheem
equipment and ask them "who's the best technician you got??" (Who would they
call to do the work on *their* family's home??) then go from there.

Ahh..home away from home...installed a ton of units out there...now..are you
REALLY in PS or are you in the armpit of the valley? (DHS..LOL!)
Kidding...it could be worse, you could live in Cat City..

You want a decent diagnosis..you need someone there that you can trust.
Short of calling in those companies that I used to put to shame on a daily
basis for their hacking abilities, like George Brazil for starters, you
might looking in your WHITE pages for a guy named Elliott Jenkins. While I
normally would say wait a couple of weeks and I will be back out there...he
is the ONLY person in the valley I trust to work on my familys stuff
there...I know how he works..after all..he trained me..:)
He is fair..hes old...and hes ugly..and you can tell the old fart Stephen
said so.
If you want, you can email me and I will give you his number, and can call
him and tell him roughly whats going on in advance.

BTW, sounds like a bad reversing valve...had a few of those on Cabeleros
(SP) Estates giving hell a few years back...replacement of the units due to
their age was the solution...and $2500 might not be a bad deal if you have a
rooftop unit. Got to love Palm Springs and their damn zoning laws...(Cant
see the AC or heating unit from the street, and if replacement dictates that
the unit must be within sight of a main road, the unit must be covered with
a skirting, or other means to hide the unit)...sheesh..

Maybe not but a healthy helping of Crisco or liquid K-Y should be included
at no extra charge ;-)
