What I mean is, how many of you use profit as the bottom line?
Is it you personally , company policy, the demeanor of the customer,
or what?
I rarely have called the same company twice because of just plain
greed. I once replaced a fridge.because of a piece of aluminum foil
that had fallen in the fan and stopped the motor. Only after I had
paid for the new one did I find this out......The company that sold me
my $4000 central air unit told me that it would substantially lower my
bill. It did not. The guy that sold me a new well tank said that it
would cut down on the iron in the water. It did not. One guy came to
the house and tried to sell me a 2500$ water softener. Went through a
whole pitch of bullshit. He was out of there. No sale! And on and on.
My real question is just how many of you are completely honest about
your work? If you want to reply anonymously I understand.
On the upside I have been happy with one plumber and a carpet
installation recently. I would call them back. I would like to assume
all you guys are not crooks, but it is hard to trust when it comes to
bucks.

I do my level best to be honest and straight forward at all times. Give
folks the information, and let them make their own decisions.

I doubt anyone else on the group will say anything different than that. Who
would admit to being a crook?

There are a lot of reasons why a higher (Seasonal) SEER rated unit may
not deliver a higher EER than the old unit. An intelligent tech will
know how to analyze your system, the ductwork, he weather environment -
humidity levels etc., the proper sizing of the replacement units, etc.

Dave, I was a HVACR contractor for well over 15 years and during that
time I gave them the straight scoop as I found it to be.

No one is perfect, on rare occasions we could be somewhat erroneous in
our assessment of the situation, but we should be as totally honest as
possible when dealing with anyone, anytime, anywhere.

It will help anyone if they will spend some time learning about air
conditioning.

This is Turtle.

Stormy in your replys here you just give the underlining thought that all hvac /
r contractor and yourself are theifs or crooks , if you did not know it. What
you wrote leave the door open for a person to catch the implied meaning from
your post. Here is a example of this.

Stormy , I'm not openly saying your a Crook and a theif, but I wonder about you
a lot.

What does that tell you Stormy?

ME: In the mechanical trades of this day and age....., it is all about
profit...pure and simple . This naturally opens the door for unethical
dealings ; couple that with the foul mouthed, could care less, cultural
philosophies, and poor attitude of todays HVAC tech , as witnessed in
this DG...and you have a recipe for this trade being what it is in the
consumers mind. Its a runaway train .... and like the saying goes
in our trade...: 'Its hard to stop a Train' ! But alas...even trains
come to a sudden stop.

It's about profit... pure and simple... in any business. None of the good
tradesmen I know go out and bust their butts every day for the fun of it.

The equipment manufacturers are in it for a profit.

The parts houses are in it for a profit.

The contractor is in it for a profit.

The contractor's employees are in it for a profit.

And the customer, too.... he's in it for a profit of some kind.

I am a small business owner, to be sure. But I will not expose myself to
hundreds of thousands (or millions) of dollars of liability for no potential
to make money.

Yes, I love my trade.... I really do.... but I've got over $1,000,000 in
equipment, inventory, buildings and rolling stock to pay for. The bank owns
a lot of it, so I need to, I guess, make a profit to pay. That takes
money... (profit).

My equipment is new because it's safer that way, my inventory and building
are up to date because I can give my customers the best service that way.
The rolling stock is new because the customer needs to know they can count
on us to get there quick to help them. All this costs a lot of money.

Funny, my customers almost never complain about money. I guess they believe
they're getting what they paid for....

Lemme just guess here, I mean you dont just leave their equipment in the
back of your pinto wagon overnite where it might get stolen or snowed upon
???

Or heaven forbid, you even pay insurance on the building ???
