... I seem to recall reading a book (Erskine Caldwell?), abt 35 years ago,
(could it have been Tobacco Road), where a key word towards the end of
the story was "Timshel" ... does anyone recognise this word? ..what is its
meaning, please?

Timshel appears in Steinbeck's East of Eden.
The Hebrew word appears in Genesis 4:7, when
G-d talks to Cain. The word means "you shall
rule". Steinbeck used the word to develop thoughts
about individual freedom versus predestination.
