I'm relatively new to design work and have finished my first site which some
of you may have seen. (www.nex.net.au/users/kingstar/afl) a site about
Australian Rules Football which is generating about 100 hits a day at the
moment.

I was planning to learn enough to make other peoples sites but am getting
such a buzz from getting hits on my site am thinking of doing more of my
own. two questions.

1. What is an average hit count for a site.

2. Is there money to be made by doing your own sites. I don't know much
about banners etc. Where do people make money doing there own sites and is
it worth it.

Sorry for being long winded.

Not a bad place to start, but are you excluding yourself from those hits?

It's hard to say. Some of my sites get up to 5000 hits a day, where others may
only get a couple hundred.

There is always money to be made. It depends on what you want to do though....

I don't really think there is an average. Some sites get 20 hits a month, others get 7 million a day (Search Engines)..

There is a lot of money to be made off of a site that can generate a lot of hits. If you site can produce around 50,000 - 70,000 unique hits a day on your main page alone you can sell banner impressions for a lot of money.

I've seen sites that sell 1 month banner listing on their main page for $1,000 .. The company I am with plans to sell banner impressions starting at $5,000 ...  Some people/company will spend millions of dollars just to advertise their web site on the net.

I'll not repeat what others have said already. Just to add that you
can get paid for hosting banners on your site at a rate of a few cents
per click thanks to companies like value click and websponsors. Even
with as few hits per day as 100. Although this will not earn you
much. :(

The other way is with associates and affiliates programs. This is
where you help a company to sell a product using your site. If used
properly, these usually generate a much richer income. See
http://mtier.cjb.net for some examples.

Al
