From an artist in oil with a site selling Oil Paintings and Reproductions.
I created my site last summer and this newsgroup was very helpful in
correcting lots of my problems.
I would like to have your opinion on this almost completed version.
Thanks in advance for the input, info and critiques.

All I get is:
Sorry, this site is temporarily unavailable!
The web site you are trying to access has exceeded its allocated data transfer.

You might want to try web1000.com. They aren't my first choice for a free site but much better than
GeoCities.

First, Geocities is the kiss of commercial death.
It screams "amateur!", even if you are not.

Second, I see scrollbars at 800x600, the most common screen resolution.
If I'm seeing those bars, most of your customers are, too.

Third, this should have been in bold and PROMINENT:
"Art Liquidation offers paintings at bargain prices."
That's what differentiates you from the "fancy" web sites.
It's what you do.

The blinking eyes are useless. Ditch them.

You have a great idea for a business, it just needs better presentation.

Sorry, but the minute I see the Geocities in your url, I know you're not
serious about having a commercial site. You need to get a domain name and
a real host for it.

Most of us here started off with free web hosts, in fact I am on a free web
host at the moment, and I seriously don't consider my self a amateur or
newbie or whatever from my latest site. Just because a person is on a free
host like angelfire or geocities doesn't mean there not serious. It might be
there just for now, until they get a good grasp on html, css, javascript,
dhtml, asp, sql and other languages before they go out and buy a domain
name. Those free hosts are a lot better than no host for when you have to
check cross platforms and browsers.
Good day.

I agree 100%. If it wasn't for xoom.com (now long gone) giving me a place to put up a few pages I
would never given it a try. Some free hosts are even better than some that aren't free as far as up
time & support.

Please go back and read my post again. I said *commercial* sites. That's a
site that looks professional enough for someone to give you their credit
card number and buy something from you. I wasn't talking about the
learning process. If you're not bucks up and need some web space, Geocities
etc is fine. However, the OP has a site that wants to sell something.
Just a second I went back there and the site was down because of too much
traffic. That's a perfect illustration of what I'm referring to. if you
have a site on the web selling something and it's worth a damn, $300 or even
$20 a month should be a worthy investment...
Again, read my post. I said commercial site.. What part of that is hard
to understand???
BTW, many of these free hosts don't let you use all the services that you
may want to learn about, including little simple perl scripts in a cgi-bin
folder..
That having been said, they are great places to practice html markup.
Just not to host a commercial site..

I agree on you there, and I was wrong. But I was thinking more along the
lines of HTML not a commercial site. I've always looked in alt.html.critique
for the coding part, not what there selling or advertising, are less I see
something that looks out of place.
