SUBJECT: Ken Duttwieller does a FORD!
In the Jan. 93 issue of Car Craft there is an article telling how Kenny
Duttweiller (of Turbo Buick fame) is doing a project for CC. The unusual
aspect of this project is that he is doing a FORD (*gasp*) motor! Kind of a
shock to us Buick fans :^)

Anyway, CC is trying to make a '92 Mustang GT screamer ... their goal is to run
200 mph on street tires with a 5.0L based small-block, without "cheating"
(nitrous), and without anything protruding above the stock hoodline.

The article goes on to tell that Kenny figured that 550-600 hp would be
necessary to make a 3000 pound Mustang go 200 mph, so he wanted to build a 750
hp motor to ensure that he has enough reserve. This allows him to run the
motor in a pretty safe operating range (not the ragged edge) and still reach
the 200 mph goal.

Kenny decided on a Vortech centrifugal supercharger. Looks just like a turbo,
only the exhaust housing is replaced by a drive pulley. The article goes thru
all the reworking that Ken did to make the motor stand up to the challenge and
then shows some of the one-off stuff that he fabricated for the project.
Finally, they show the dyno results which show 742 hp @ 7500 rpm with 535
ft-lbs of torque @ 5900 rpm. The torque curve is very flat above about 5000
rpm ... Kenny basically says it is easy getting "only" 700 hp out of this combo
... he's used to more radical setups!

Overall, pretty interesting .... I wonder how much of this will be marketed as
the hot set up for the 5.0 Mustang guys in the future?

Long ago, Bob Glidden switched from running Fords to Chryslers. Ford
had withdrawn from racing again, and Chrysler offered him a sponsorship.
Glidden had been on a long winning streak, but his competition had
written him off - surely it would take years to get back up to speed.
They were shocked when Glidden showed up next season and started winning
again.

A one-off what? Duttweiler made a pulley, or whittled a whole blower
out of aluminum? The info I got from Vortech a couple of years ago
showed a curve falling off drastically at about 10psi, and 10psi ain't
gonna get you 700hp!

Well, first I'd say he obviously isn't running 93 octane gas, so its
probably decent compression (10.5:1?) plus 10 psi boost, possibly more
boost if he's running a pair of Vortech's rather than a single one.
Intercooling is fairly uncommon in supercharged applications, but I'd be
very surprised if he wasn't using one which should help some (as a datapoint,
we were getting a little over 300F rise in intake temp pushing 10psi boost
at 6000 engine rpm on a 350 chevy with a roots type blower (running
natural gas, no cooling due latent heat of evaporization like you have
when you sit a carb on top of the blower). Regardless, I know the GTO
guys are pushing ~650hp from smallblocks normally aspirated with carbs,
it doesn't surprise me that he can get 750hp with a blower and EFI.
I guess I ought to read the article... (especially since we just
ordered a Vortec for the NGV truck).
