(Adds law enforcement source on investigation)

By Ian Simpson

Former Russian Press Minister Mikhail Lesin, who was found dead in a
Washington hotel room last year, died of blunt force injuries to the head,
U.S. authorities said on Thursday.

Lesin who once headed the state-controlled Gazprom-Media, also had blunt
force injuries to the neck, torso, arms and legs, the U.S. capital's
Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Metropolitan Police
Department said in a brief statement.

According to a police incident report, Lesin, who was President Vladimir
Putin's press minister from 1999 to 2004, was found unconscious on Nov. 5
on the floor of his room in the Doyle Washington Hotel. The hotel is also
known as the Dupont Circle Hotel. An ambulance was called and he was
pronounced dead at the scene.

Russia's RT television quoted family members at the time as saying he had
died of a heart attack.

A U.S. law enforcement source said on Thursday the investigation into
Lesin's death was being led by Washington, D.C. police.

The investigation was focused on Lesin's death, but that did not rule out
a possible change to a murder probe, said the source, who declined to be
identified when discussing the matter.

The source said when police first investigated the hotel room where
Lesin's body was found, they did not find any damage or evidence
indicating foul play.

ABC News has said Lesin had been accused of censoring Russia's independent
media. He became head of Gazprom-Media Holding in 2013 but resigned the
following year.

A spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Washington was not immediately
available for comment. (Reporting by Ian Simpson; Additional reporting by

Interesting case.

Actually, he wasn't really an enemy of Putin - he'd
just kinda fallen out of favor. It'd be more enlightening
to track down his NON-political associates and
activities. Some were likely Russian Mafia. Maybe
he pissed them off.

There's also some question as to whether he was
killed at his hotel or just beaten-up elsewhere and
managed to get back home before the toll of his
injuries finished him off. It was reported that he
had an extremely high blood-alcohol level, so he
may have even gotten into some bar-fight and
took a few too many whacks to the head.

I know it's popular to pin the death of *anyone*
who used to be in or around Putins govt on
Putin but, frankly, this guy wasn't worth Putins
time.

He never fell 'out of favor',
he 'left the business' for health
reasons (spine fracture in 2010).

Translation. "He fell out of favor."

In 2004, he was essentially stripped of his vast wealth as one of the
oligarch's Putin robbed after having been served so well by them.

Among other accomplishments, he founded RT, he merged his vast,
private media empire with state controlled media bringing all Russian
media under the direct control of the Kremlin and vast wealth to
himself. He was an engineer by education and avocation working many
years in Mongolia.

In 2011, he retired with his family to Beverly Hills.

"In 2013, he returned to Russia and from October 1, 2013, until
January 12, 2015, he was head of Gazprom-Media, a state-controlled
media giant that describes itself as one of the largest media groups
in Russia and Europe.[17][18] He resigned in December 2014, citing
family reasons.[17] After retiring, he spent several months in
Switzerland for treatments to a spinal injury that he received while
skiing and then returned to his home in California."

And very shortly thereafter was found beaten to death in a Washington,
D.C. hotel room. Yeah, I'd say he fell out of favor. Right into a
barrel full brass knuckles and lead pipes.

At the time, cause of death was given out as heart attack. But four
months later, the DC medical examiner released a report that actual
cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and noted numerous
blunt force injuries on his arms and torso.

"The medical examiner’s office did not explain the timing of its
announcement, nor why the findings took so long. Officials there had
said as recently as Wednesday that it would not imminently release its
findings, only to reverse course the next day. His death remains the
subject of a police investigation, though spokesmen for the
Metropolitan Police Department and the F.B.I. in Washington declined
to comment."

Hmm . . .

Lessee . . . He was the head of Putin's propaganda machine. He
suddenly retired due to health reasons and for the second time, moved
to the US, where he seems to have stashed not inconsiderable wealth.

would feel if you just met a guy named Donald Drumpf:

he can’t decide whether or not to condemn.

You're a sort of funny folks, guys.

Your 'smart' speculations look funny as well.

Nah. Don't buy it. He hadn't made a career out of
demonizing Putin like some of the others - he just
left the picture and minded his own business. Not
a "threat". Not worth an "incident".

Putin is not Mr. Nice Guy ... but he *is* very smart.
Assassination on US soil is bad business, especially
when it came to a severely-diminished ex-minion.

Occams razor says he pissed-off somebody HERE,
and they pummeled him. Doesn't even sound like the
intent was to kill him, more of an "oops !".

I've chided people who make up stuff to blame Obama for
when there's plenty of REAL stuff avaliable. Sounds like
you're doing the same here, you WANT Putin to be
guilty.
