Hi there,
I hope nobody minds if I post something other than links to porn
sights or such that seem to be flooding the news groups at this time.
What I would like to talk about, and hope some of you will comment on,
is the passing history of Horror fiction on radio to begin with. Since the
creation of radio there has been a long history the horror serial. those
late night fright treats that let the imagination of so many run riot. I
recently became interested in these serials when I brought a number of disks
with MP3s of the old radio shows. I am wondering if there are any other
fans of these old shows out there and if they have any thoughts on them.
For those of who wish to buy these disks there are 2 places that I brought
mine through at quite reasonable prices. the first being
www.radiomemory.com and the second being www.theradiolady.com . I am not
sure if it is possible to post MP3s on these newsgroups or you might find
attached a few of my favorite stories.
The next area I would like to talk on is that of horror comics in daily
newspapers, or the lack there of. We see daily comics on all manner of
subjects, family life, teens, sports and so on, but never on horror.
Alright there is Scooby Doo but I would not really call him horror, more
comic horror at best. With so many fans of horror fiction there must be a
market for it out there. If so what sort of horror fiction could we hope to
see? it would be foolish to say Splatter Punk type horror, I do not believe
John Q. Public could stomach that over his morning cornflakes. Though it
brings up an amusing image of the breakfast pukes in the Burbs. So what
sort of Horror strip can you folks out there imagine, urban Myths, urban
decay, the deep wilderness, what?
I hope this sparks some exchange of ideas.

Snip part of the post.

Well you do find some horror in comic books, although not much. And what
there is from what I've seen tends toward the splaterpunk then the
thoughtful. I can't think of any paper strips that have horror as theme. You
might find some old Calvin and Hobbes that has a horror element. But you
have to put yourself in a 6 year olds shoes in order to be scared by it. In
the comic book area, your best bet is to look for some of the better
dectective/mystery stories. Some of those have the suspense of some of the
radio shows I've heard when I was young. Just so I don't misinform you as to
my age, I never heard The Shadow on the radio, or it's ilk. But the library
did have some of the shows on cassette which I did listen to.

Some titles to check out. Powers by Brian Michael Bendis. Takes an odd look
at the effect of super heros in an ordinary world. Follows the stories of a
mundane detective who investigates superhero related crimes. Has more in
common with Law and Order then it does Batman. The title called Fables,
deals with fairy tail creatures trying to live in the real world. The first
story is a closed door mystery that reminded me of Asimov's Black Widow
mysteries. Both of these titles I would consider adult for theme and mild
language. Granted the lyrics of the latest Eminem song are much worse and
kids listen to it all the time, I still like to give warning. Things like
showing an autospy on a woman are not something you want to stumble on.

Another detective/horror comic is by Bendis. It's called Torso and it's
based on real events about America's first known serial killer. It involves
Eleiot Ness of "Untouchables" fame and his life after Capone. It's more of a
Silence of the Lambs type of horror then Friday the 13th.

Well back to the original point of the post. I thik there is an opertunity
for Serials to make a comeback. What with the web quickly growing in power
to rival anything else out there, I think that if a talented group put
together a good horror serial it would probably gain a sizable following.
Even better is the fact that your not really taking up air time if you do it
right, and people all over the world can find it regaurdless of syndication
surely doesn't hurt. I'd listen anyway.

I dig the old radio serials, though my own collection is pretty limited (I
do have a good run
of the Green Hornet -- not exactly horror, but comics related). As for
posting binary attach-
ments, you could attempt it in this group, but most servers would drop your
posts. There is,
however, a fairly dead binaries group that might be a good place to invade
with old-time
dramatic serials: alt.binaries.sound.radio

Once I've posted this I'll follow by posting some Green Hornet MP3s to that
group -- the
messages will be yEncoded and split, so it may take some effort getting it
working. Also
I am on a dialup connection, so it won't be much of a flood. Just a test to
see if the group is
being archived by everyone's Usenet services.

Thanks for posting, and let me know if the files make it through on ABSR :)

The active binary newsgroups for those old radio shows are:
alt.binaries.sounds.radio.oldtime ,
alt.binaries.sounds.radio.oldtime.highspeed , and
alt.binaries.sound.radio.oldtime . There are active posts right now of the
Suspense series and the Whistler, amongst many others.
