Some times however it is important to know what really when on in a
situation. I might watch the movie for curiosity and better understanding.
I don't think that I would be eating popcorn and enjoying another's
misfortune
Horror for me is entertainment - this stuff is not entertainment it is more
hard core documentary with a chance that it may slip in to the worst part of
human nature - Sadism. - Joy at the misery of others.
But how is it any different from the film footage of "Turkey shoot" a the
end of the first Gulf War. These people were running away. Pilots patting
each of other on the back and saying it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
I'm proud to say that while I consider myself a fan of serious horror
cinema (and perhaps not so serious, given my fondness for classic
exploitation films), I have *never* seen a "Faces Of Death"
installment. Heard they're pure schlock produced by cynical hacks. I
do occasionally visit the death & gore sites just to give myself a
morbid kick in the ass & keep things in perspective about my own
mortality. However, even this is something I haven't done in quite a
while, possibly because one of the last nightmare images I saw (an AVI
of a live Russian solider having his head slowly cut off with a knife
by Chechen rebels, shot in close up with one of those old black &
white half-inch tape video cameras by the bloodthirsty rebels
themselves) has become imbued in my brain, like some kind of awful
grey-matter feeding worm, and I can't get the fuckin' thing out! At
least it might have cured me of this terrible curiosity I have... or
hopefully *had*... PRAISE ALLAH!

It's different because the pilots got paid to do it, making them hired killers.

Um, yeah, okay, Jacques Costeau. If you could be transported back in
time to New Jersey around the turn of the century where a bull shark
got lost in a fresh water tributary, took a bite of people flesh,
liked it, took another bite from a different person, liked it even
more, then took another bite from a third, then a fourth, then a
fifth, leaving dead body after dead body, I'm sure you wouldn't be

I used to think that watching reality death tapes made me hardcore.
They were also difficult to get a hold of here. So I had to have some.
I sat through a few. The original "Faces of Death" series contains
much fakery. "Traces of Death" is the real deal. Threat Theatre's
"Faces of Gore" series is worse than "Traces", and the source material
is better quality.
I have the "Faces of Death" box set. It was a freebie. I can't work up
enough will to watch one of them. I bought the HK VCD of "Traces of
Death IV", a fucking UGLY film that made me realise I just can't
handle the tragedy anymore.

That happened in Chicago around '92 or '93. That train was doing
one last historical run before they retired it, that's why there
was an amateur there with a camera. It was some kind of famous model.
She and the guy next to her were intentionally trying to cross over
as the train was coming -- you can hear the horn blaring.

guy was an artist who somehow procured aborted fetuses for an
art exhibit. Tasteless? Yeah.
Nothing more.

I used to work as an Associate Producer for a news gathering agency. Hence,
I would watch satelite feeds of raw news footage, some of it live. I've
seen more footage of people getting shot, blown up, killed in an accident,
or offing themselves than anyone should have to see. And it's not
entertainment. Not surprisingly, that's when I began finding it hard to
sleep at night.
Horror is honest in that it's the genre that brings out emotions and
desires in the greatest possible light, while typically keeping some strand
of fantasy intact. But it's that fantasy that helps us deal.

It's an acquired taste ;-)
Agree. I saw this pic and it haunted me for days. Rotten labelled it as
"nothing gets between me and my Harley" or some shit like that. in fact, the
Snopes (www.snopes.com) message board site, in the horrors section had a
multi page debate whether the image was faked or not. Most people seemed to
agree that the man without a face was a masterpiece of makeup.

Hehe, yeah that International Court stuff was cause for some debate
here in the Netherlands. One scenario was that US marines would invade
the Netherlands in order to get US war criminals out (they would land
at Scheveningen, next to The Hague where Milosovic is now). Ofcourse
they wouldn't have a shot on their own, the dutch navy is one of the
most powerfull in the world. Unless they get some help from Blair
ofcourse which would not be unthinkable in such an unlikely scenario.
I think Bush and his sidekicks are doing a great service to the
development of a united european army. He insults countries like
Germany, gets fucked in the arse by Tony Blair, before we know it
we're all called Nazis and be part of the empire of evil.
Make no mistake, the combined armies of Europe are second only to
those of the americans, this is a good time to get them united and get
rid of those pacifist losers who run them before we're overrun by the
yanks :-)

that guy was on a channel 4 art documentary over here and it was portrayed
as real (whether it was or not).
what was real was that in another article on the same show a bunch of arty
types gathered to drink wine made from a donated severed penis from a man
having a sex change operation.
one of them became abusive to the camera crew because they wouldn't join in

No, I don't think he has. As a matter of fact, I think he hits the
nail on the head.
Rotten shows the other side of our human embodiment, we are flesh
creatures and can look brutally disgusting, we can rot, be infested by
worms, have our brains shot out of our heads, etc. What Rotten shows
is how rotten our bodies can look. Most people don't want to know.
Likewise, most people don't want to see where the meat balls they're
eating come from and that animals were sacrificed for it (Wir haben es
nicht gewusst), same goes for animal testing. War is the same thing,
people simply don't want to know what it really looks like, they want
to hear about glory, patriotism, doing the right thing, etc. but
there's little glory on the battlefield.
People are so disgusted by the sight of *real* death and mutilation
that they believe it's sick to even want to look at or be involved in
such a thing. I don't believe most people visiting Rotten are sick but
merely curious about or fascinated by this other side of our bodies.
Ofcourse it's gross but that doesn't mean you have to be some sadist
to look at it voluntarily.

LOL! Actually, Bod does have a point (purely by chance ofcourse).
There are few sharks that really attack people (only the Tiger and
Hammerhead I believe, they're very aggressive). We're not on their
menu but a swimming human looks to a shark conspicuously like a seal
(and those are *on* the menu). After a quick bite they usually realize
their mistake and leave causing all those survivors with missing legs
and stuff.
Ofcourse evolution has a way of punishing animals who are so dense to
attack the master race and the great white shark almost became extinct
due to the hunting that followed a number of incidents on the amarican
east coast just before WW2. Lucky for them, the discovery channel was
invented just in time ;-)

Just for the record the first "Faces of Death" type commercial film
seems to be "The Execution of Li-Tang, the Chunchus Chief of
Manchurian bandits" filmed by Russian cameraman P. Kobtson for Pathé
and listed in the Charles Urban catalog of 1904.

Jesus told me
I saw the morticycle accident and couldn't believe he was sitting up,
number 1, and number 2, I sincerely hoped that platic surgery is
advanced enough to do something for him.

Fine but don't complain about 9/11 it was nothing personal it was just war.

Yeah, I saw a couple of them as well (I believe 1 and 2). They sucked.

Well, it's amazing what they can do nowadays. I don't remember the
name of the action ("Operation Smile" or something) but a bunch of
plastic surgeons travel each year to third world countries where they
work miracles on children with very severe deformations. It's a great
thing these surgeons do this all for charity, ofcourse they do get
paid a bundle with their normal day job making beautifull women even
more beautifull but I guess the charity work is what it's really about
for them (also more of a challenge ofcourse :-)

I'm not complaining but I thought it was an incredible stupid thing to
do, we all know what the americans are capable of doing. The
terrorists have squandered any good will left in the West and have
done the people they claim to protect a great disservice.
I visit rotten.com quite regularly.
It's like I used to tell my mom when she found my Playboy magazines under my
bed, "It's the articles, not the picture..."
And besides, I think if everyone sees what rotten things go on in the world,
maybe they might do something about it, or not.....

Well, I hope so...that's what I kept telling myself, anyway. The one
thing I thought was suspect was the fact that he appeared to be
sitting up. If I had to make a guess, though, I'd say it was
authentic.
Not going to look at it again, however.

The one I saw might've been three and there was one segment that I
thought was genuine. Someone was filming when paramedics came to help a
guy who was working on a car and the jack caved or something. His lower
leg was nearly severed by the wheel and brake assembly falling on it.
When they pulled him out it went from nearly severed to severed and I
noticed you could see the muscles contracting in the stump area. That
was nasty....
and different from most of the rest of the stuff where they had movie
style editing and the same switching from normal shot to makeup effect.
effects dummy etc that we are used to in horror movies.

That's great, I never heard of that.
Best,
Mike
>I saw one FOD tape once and it looked about 75% faked to me.
For what it's worth, I was working on some film or another with a
couple of other FX makeup artists who had done at least one of the FOD
films, and both said that for whichever tape (or tapes) it was, almost
everything had been faked.

I worked for one of Holland's biggest companies for a few years. I get
it. What I don't get, though, is how you reconcile that wholesome image
of windmills, clogs and cheeses with a penchant for snuff sites and
horse-fisting videos.

Isn't it interesting how many such little internet legends
there are out there? And we all know about them. Things like
this make me wonder where they originated.
Without further ado...
Originally this post was a lot longer 'cause I was going
to list the possible stories I found behind this picture.
After a bit of digging around it got too long so I'll
stick with what I consider to be plausible facts. First off,
this article did appear in the Associated Press in '97:
*****************************************************************
[Associated Press, Kincaid, W. VA] Blasting Cap Explodes in Man's
Mouth at Party
A man at a party popped a blasting cap into his mouth and bit down,
triggering an explosion that blew off his lips, teeth and tongue,
state police said Wednesday.
Jerry Stromyer, 24, of Kincaid, bit the blasting cap as a prank
during a party late Tuesday night, said Cpl. M.D. Payne.
''Another man had it in an aquarium, hooked to a battery, and was
trying to explode it,'' Payne said. ``It wouldn't go off and this guy
said, `I'll show you how to set it off.'
''He put it in his mouth and bit down. It blew all his teeth off, his
tongue and his lips,'' Payne said.
Stromyer was listed in guarded condition Wednesday with extensive
facial injuries, according to a spokesman at Charleston Area Medical
Division.
``I just can't imagine anyone doing something like that,'' Payne said.
*****************************************************************
Here's a shorter version of the article, also attributed to the
Associated Press:
*****************************************************************

There are also a few other stories, one placing him in Indiana
in 2000 and claiming this was a failed shotgun suicide attempt.
I think the person who said this (in rec.motorcycles) must have
been mistaken. I'll ignore this completely.
Another person in rec.pyrotechnics says he was a miner and this
happened in a mining town. The blasting cap is spoken of as being
an M80.
Jerry Stromyer is listed living in Indiana.
There you have it. No motorcycle accident.
