Just arrived on my server. Didn't know there was ANOTHER one... will
watch that tomorrow, seeing as I have a lot of spare time now. I bet
it's CRAP.

IIRC it started life as a totally seperate horror film entitled "Deader" but
they had problems getting it off the ground, so seeing as they were looking
for material for another Hellraiser sequel they re-wrote it to include
Pinhead and co

Yeah -- actually -- I wrote "Deader" in 1999 and sold it to Dimension
by way of Stan Winston's company. It was in development there for over
18 months and they even had a director attached -- Jim Sonzero (who,
actually, is now apparently doing some other horror movie for
Dimension). We reached a point where we had a draft that the director
liked and everybody on the development staff liked -- and then it got
to Bob Weinstein -- and he didn't like it.

And it just sort of sat there. For a long time we were trying to get it
loose -- to get somebody else to buy the script from Dimension (it
wasn't a matter of the script going into "turnaround" -- because they'd
bought the script outright -- so they owned it outright). And even
though they didn't want to make it -- they also didn't want to sell it
and, potentially, have somebody somebody else make it, profit from it,
and thus look silly for not having made it themselves.

Then, after something like a year or two of silence, we hear that
Dimension *does* want to produce the screenplay -- by rewriting it as a
direct-to-video Hellraiser sequel and shooting it back to back with yet
another direct-to-video Hellraiser sequel -- in Romania (the original
screenplay took place on the lower east side of Manhattan).

Well, that's what they wanted to do. They bought the script. They owned
it. They had the right to do whatever they wanted to do with it. That's
what they did with it.

I read the screenplay when the movie went into production (they had to
send it to me -- it was a WGA requirement). I can't say that I was
terribly impressed with the results. I haven't seen the movie. They
certainly haven't bothered to send me a copy of it.

If anybody is interested, somebody has actually posted my original
screenplay on-line.

It's here, for what it's worth -- nobody will ever see it produced.:

I think I have only seen the first 2, but this one is suppose to be
pretty gory.

Get ready, they shot it back-to-back with another sequel. So, while
HELLRAISER VII: DEADER comes out next month, HELLRAISER VIII: HELLWORLD
comes out in September. I think both of them were filmed in 2003 and
delayed, as is typical for Miramax/Dimension. Personally, I love the
first two and actually throught HELLSEEKER (which brought back Ashley
Laurence in a supporting role) was decent. Other than that, blech!

In my writings on Horror Express, I've done both some heavy analysis and
infantile ranting about the crazy things that went on at Dimension. It's
fascinating to hear the inside story from someone who actually was
involved. As someone who believes that any great project begins with the
writer, I hope things turn out better for you in the future.

I hope the movie is better than you expect. Either way, your story is

That's really interesting. I've dabbled in screenplay writing once or
twice and the thing that always put me off was the idea of someone ELSE
just re-writing it, or a director not shooting the scenes the way I
imagined them... which was really naive, so I stopped! I starting
writing novels instead. More control there (although, just as unlikely
to get published).

I feel vaguely guilty now for having a copy of the screener! I promise,
I do BUY far more movies than I download!

which was the one where pinhead had a minor role and the tongue face thing
was the main baddie?
wasn't bad but seemed not like a hellraiser film at all - maybe it was this
one?

That was "Inferno" (I choose not to call it "Hellraiser: Inferno") The
fifth in the series (and the first straight-to-video.) Watched that one
again recently, and I rather liked it (but, then I liked Hellraiser:
Bloodline)
Wasn't too keen on "Hellseeker," mainly because it was too similar to
Inferno. There is yet to be a 'perfect' Hellraiser film, (or an utterly
unwatchable one, for that matter,) but so far my favourite is Hellraiser II.

The followup is going to be called "Deaderer" and the next one will be
"Even Deaderer".

Hadn't thought of that (actually, Inferno had even more in common with
Angel Heart.) But, the reason I liked Inferno and not Hellseeker, is
basically because Inferno tried to do something new and interesting. The
Hellraiser films seemed to be taking more of a Twilight Zone anthology
direction. But, with Hellseeker, it was clear that they'd just traded in one
set of cliches (someone opens the box and talkative Pinhead comes to do
various gruesome things, until he's sent back to Hell,) with another (wierd
stuff happens for ninety minutes, until Pinhead finally appears to tell the
protagonist he's dead.)

I'd like to add, incidentally, I don't think there's nearly enough films
like Angel Heart. That, and "The Ninth Gate," are about the only examples I
know of the horror-noir genre, which happens to be perhaps my all time
favourite kind of movie.

Both fab films, although lots of people panned The Ninth Gate, I loved it.

Neal is a regular contributor to another group I frequent
(alt.misc.writing.screenplays.moderated) and lemme tell ya he's got
shitloads of 'em.

As someone who believes that any great project begins with the

Obviously, it can never feel good when somebody mistreats one of your
babies like this, but don't feel too bad for him. He wrote the "Thirteen
Ghosts" remake which turned out pretty good and has a bunch of other stuff
on the way, but I'll let him tell you about that if he feels like it.

Oh, and I definitely recommend downloading the unmolested version of his
script for "Deader". It's a genuinely creepy and disturbing yarn (which
involves a *really* creepy and disturbing sexual fetish that makes
infantalism seem normal by comparison) and his prose style makes for a
zippy, page-turning read.

Cheers,

B

That's a shame because I thought it was great, and would have made an
interesting movie. Loved the narrowing walls scene and reckon the
cracks of "reality" could have looked incredible. Does anybody who's
seen the Hellraiser film know much made it on screen?

Thanks for posting this. Perhaps some of our other creative types will
feel inspired to share their work (no poetry please*).

I feel pretty much the same way about the series. Though I also kind of
dug Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. After that, they lost me, at least
until Hellseeker came out. Like you, I found that one to be quite
interesting and well made(for a straight to video movie anyhow..).
Ashley Laurence returning was a big plus as well.

The 5th one was so awful I can't even remember what it's called anymore.

I just finished reading the script (after watching the movie this
morning), and wow. They really made a mess of it! Your version was
fantastic. Totally frightening in a few places, and like someone else
said, the whole splintering of the real-world/shadow-world scenes are
inspired. That would have looked fantastic on film! The story was great,
and I really enjoy the... trip! I'm really sorry they screwed you over
on the film! I hope at the very least you got some good money for the
original script.
