Anyone have a list of 70's and 80's Public Domain movies (from the
Horror/Scifi genres if possible)?

I work on Chiller Theater with Ned The Dead and all of the movies
he has are older PD movies (like Horror Express, The Corpse Grinders,
The House on Haunted Hill, Plan 9 From Outer Space and Night of the
Living Dead) and he is looking for newer 70's and 80's PD movies to
show. Looking for everything from Slasher to horror to scifi to
fantasy movies from this era in the PD.

I found these movies on more then one "pubic domain" movie list and
was curious as to how I can verify if these are indeed free to use over
the air.

> Alice Sweet Alice; Holy Terror; Communion (1976) 1hour 52 minutes

PD the same way NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was... they didn't affix the
copyright notice to the retitling of ALICE SWEET ALICE from COMMUNION. It's
fair game as a result--at least under the ALICE SWEET ALICE TITLE.

> Black Six, The(1974) 1 hour 31 minutes

Fair game.

> Dripping Deep Red(1975) 1 hour 40 minutes

The U.S. cut of DEEP RED (aka THE HATCHET MURDERS) is fair game--not the
Anchor Bay restoration of the original.

> God Told Me To, Demon(1976) 1 hour 29 minutes

Apparently so, though you don't get to use the restored DVD print...

> Impulse(1974) 1 hour 25 minutes

As far as I know, this one's fair game.

> Infra-Man(1976) 1 hour 32 minutes

Frequently mistaken for PD, but Shaw Brothers pounces on anyone who actually
tries to use it. Restored on DVD as THE INFRA SUPERMAN.

> Invasion Of The Bee Girls(1973) 1 hour 28 minutes

Yep.

> Octaman(1971) 1 hour 19 minutes

Go for it.

> Phenomena(1985) 1 hour 50 minutes

Not the restored PHENOMENA from Anchor Bay, but the cut U.S. print of
CREEPERS is usable.

> Satan's School For Girls(1973) 1 hour 14 minutes

Original, yes. Remake, no.

>
> ABSOLUTION
> Suspense/Drama/Horror Color 95m 1981

From what I can tell, yes. But not really a horror film.

>
> BLOOD TIDE
> Horror Color 82m 1982
> AKA: THE RED TIDE.

Fair game.

>
> BRAIN MACHINE, THE
> Science-Fiction Clr 90 min 1983 G

Fair game.

>
> DAWN OF THE MUMMY
> Horror Color 93m 1982

Well, WE certainly got away with it.

>
> DEADTIME STORIES
> Horror Color 93m 1986

Pronounced PD by outfits such as Mill Creek, so you have precedent.

>
> DEVIL MASTER, THE
> Horror Color 91 1983

That's Donald G. Jackson's THE DEMON LOVER, and it's fair game.

>
> DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS
> Horror Color 86m 1984

Yep.

>
> DRILLER KILLER
> Horror Color 78m 1974

Not the restored DVD, but the OOP Wizard release is fair game.

>
> DRIVE-IN MASSACRE
> Horror Color 78m 1974

Yep.

>
> EMBRYO
> Science-Fiction Color 104 min 1976 PG

Go for it.

>
> FANTASTIC PLANET, THE
> Animated/Sci-Fi Color 72m 1973

Yep, fair game.

>
> FRIGHTMARE
> Horror Color 86m 1974

I believe this one's PD in the States, but don't use the Media Blasters
restoration. AKA COVER-UP, FRIGHTMARE II and ONCE UPON A FRIGHTMARE.

>
> FUNERAL HOME
> Horror Color 93m 1982
> AKA: CRIES IN THE NIGHT.

No problemo.

>
> GALAXY INVADER
> Sci-Fi Color 90m 1985

Yep.

>
> HANGAR 18
> Sci-Fi Color 93m 1980

From what I've read, yes.

>
> JUST BEFORE DAWN
> Horror Color 90m 1971

Hotly disputed--more than one supposed PD label has been made to withdraw
this title. If you DO luck across a copy of the William Castle "Crime
Doctor" movie with this title, you're in luck.

>
> KILLING KIND, THE
> Horror Color 95m 1973

Never given an "authorized" video release, but fair game from plenty of PD
companies, so you have precedent.

>
> MAMA DRACULA
> Horror Color 90m 1980

Yep.

>
> MEDUSA
> Horror/Suspense Color 103m 1974

No problemo.

>
> MESSIAH OF EVIL
> Horror Color 90m 1983

Tons of precedent, so you're fine.

>
> METAMORPHOSIS
> Sci-Fi/Animated Color 96m 1990

Well, it's NOT animated, but it's okay to use.

>
> NAKED MASSACRE
> Horror/Suspense Color 90m 1976

Not horror, but you're okay.

>
> OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES
> Horror Color 75m 1982

Precedent to burn.

>
> SCREAM BLOODY MURDER
> Horror Color 90m 1972

Fair game.

>
> SEDUCERS, THE
> Horror/Drama Color 91m 1976

The Sondra Locke movie? Haven't heard personally about PD status on that
one-where did you hear about that?

>
> SILENT NIGHT BLOODY NIGHT
> Horror Color 90m 1973

Unquestionably.

>
> SLASHED DREAMS
> Horror Color 74m 1974

Yeah, it's fair game, but trust me--you don't want it, even if Robert
Englund IS in it. It's a non-horror revenge melodrama filmed as SUNBURST and
it's not worth your time.

>
> SOMEONE BEHIND THE DOOR
> Suspense/Drama/Horror Color 97m 1971

Oh, hell yeah. We ran that one ourselves. Good stuff. BRONSON!

>
> SURROGATE, THE
> Suspense/Drama/Horror Color 95m 1984

Not familiar with this one.

>
> SURVIVAL EARTH
> Sci-Fi Color 90m 1979

Don't rightly know about this one, either.

>
> SUSPIRIA
> Horror Color 97m 1977
> AKA: CREEPERS

Actually, it's NOT aka CREEPERS--THAT one was PHENOMENA--but SUSPIRIA has
been pronounced PD by plenty of sources.

>
> TUAREG: DESERT WARRIOR
> Sci-Fi Color 97m 1983

Haven't heard that this one was PD, but it's likely.

>
> UFO: TARGET EARTH
> Sci-Fi Color 80m 1974

Plenty of people have used this one.

>
> UNSANE
> Horror/Suspense Color 91m 1982
> AKA: TENEBRAE

Yeah, well, the print called UNSANE is fair game, but it's cut to hell.
Can't vouch for the uncut TENEBRAE.

>
> WHO?
> Sci-Fi Color 93m 1974
> AKA: ROBO MAN.

Effortlessly usable. And it's got Elliott Gould, so go for it.

Hope this helps,

Thank you so much.

Where can I find "offical" info on the PD status of these (I need to
have something in "writing" for my station manager, she won't let us
use anything that we MIGHT have to pay for later).

Are you using the AMERICAN BOOTLEGGING SCUM's definition of "public
domain", or the one the rest of the world and all their law enforcement
agencies use?

You would do better not to discuss any aspect of your ordeal with the
mocking imbeciles residing in the alt. horror newsgroup. Let them
chatter and slaver and drool as much as they wish. Discussing something
as upsetting and horrendous as that with dribbling, gibbering
schadenfreude infected monkeys is hardly a recipe to be recommended. -

it has to be said, if the bootlegging scum are so wrong, how come they get
away with it? - they never seem to get sued.

Now, I'm not in the business of selling copies of any of these movies, but
this is the best way to cross-check anything for legal status of any given
title.
