In an interview with Aristide Massaccesi

(http://members.tripod.com/~EuroFan/BT2index.html), Blood Times

Video's Louis Paul <blo...@aol.com> asked him the following

question: "The Emanuelle films, I guess because the first one was so

successful, you decided to make yours...How did you meet Laura

Gemser, whose real name is Moira Chen?" Similarly, in a review of

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals

Violent Vision's Christer Persson <pap...@swipnet.se> claims that

Gemser is "Moira Chen to her mom;" he told me a few days ago that

he read that "Moira Chen" was Gemser's birth name "in several other

magazines and fanzines." I have also seen a couple of webpages

devoted to pseudonyms of Eurohorror stars that echo this claim.

I understand that in her extensive interview with Manlio Gomarasca

that appears in Nocturno Cinema's book Io Emanuelle - Le passioni,

gli amori e il cinema di Laura Gemser, Gemser told Gomarasca that

"Moira Chen" was a pseudonym of hers that she was pressured by

director Hall Bartlett into adopting for the 1983 American made-for-

TV movie Love Is Forever (a.k.a. Comeback and Passion & Valor),

in order to minimize recognition of her as being the star of a

number of pornographic films (most notably, the "Black Emanuelle"

series). Admittedly, however, I haven't read this interview myself.

Does anyone in alt.horror know if "Moira Chen" is Gemser's real

name, or was her birth name?

BTW, in a post a few weeks ago, I made a reference to "Moira

Chen (a.k.a. Laura Gemser);" this should have read "Laura Gemser

(a.k.a. Moira Chen)." I'm inclined to believe that "Moira Chen" is

a pseudonym of Gemser's. This accidental reversal by me is

actually what has prompted me to ask the question above.

it's not. it was a psuedonym she used in a movie and it got all kinds of blown
outta proportion.

This is what she told me also when I spoke to her in 1998 trying to get her to
join D'Amato at the Chiller Theatre Con. She is originally from Indonesia and
claims her first language is Dutch. I stand to believe her real name to be
Gemser. Although her middle initial is M. she never said what it stands for,
Lauretta M Gemser.

"Gemser" primarily is a Dutch surname. It's highly plausible
that Laura Gemser had Dutch patrilineal ancestors, as Java was
once controlled by the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie -
i.e., the Netherlands-based United East India Company). On the
other hand, Indonesia has for some time had a prosperous Chinese
minority, so it's also quite plausible that Gemser had Chinese
patrilineal ancestors, and "Chen" primarily is a Chinese
surname....
According to Blood Times Video's Louis Paul <blo...@aol.com>,
Adalberto Albertini told him in an interview that Gemser was
modeling under the name "Moira Chen" when he first met her, so
if this was a pseudonym of hers, it apparently was one that she
used long before 1983. I'm merely playing the devil's advocate,
though; I agree with the two of you that "Moira Chen" was a
pseudonym of Gemser's.

Now I'm wondering what she has done lately. Going to visit imdb.com now to
see!
Haven't seen an 'Emanuelle' flick in a long time.

Laura has been out of the film industry since the early 90's. She's engaged to
a doctor now who, from what I've been told, isn't too fond of her past film
career. I spoke to him personally back before D'Amato died. He seemed like a
nice chap. But who knows?
