The plot of Lake Placid 1999 follows Kelly Scott (Fonda), a paleontologist from New York City who is sent to Black Lake to examine a tooth found in the body of a diver killed by an unknown creature. She joins Sheriff Hank Keough (Gleeson), Fish and Wildlife officer Jack Wells (Pullman) and mythology professor Hector Cyr (Platt), who believes the creature is a crocodile. They soon discover that the lake is home to a massive saltwater crocodile that was brought there by an elderly woman named Delores Bickerman (White), who has been feeding it for years.

The group tries to capture or kill the crocodile using various methods, such as baiting it with a cow, trapping it with a net and shooting it with a tranquilizer gun. However, the crocodile proves to be too smart and powerful for them, and kills several people, including a deputy, a helicopter pilot and a bear. The group also learns that there is another crocodile in the lake, which is the mate of the first one. They decide to use an explosive device to blow up both crocodiles, but Hector accidentally detonates it prematurely, injuring himself and Jack.

Kelly and Hank manage to lure the crocodiles to the surface by using an electric prod. They shoot one of them in the head, killing it instantly. The other one attacks them, but Jack arrives and shoots it in the eye, blinding it. Kelly then finishes it off by chopping off its head with an axe. The group celebrates their victory, but Delores reveals that she has more baby crocodiles in her house. The film ends with a shot of the baby crocodiles swimming in the lake.

Some critics praised the film's humor, special effects and performances, especially by Betty White as the eccentric widow who feeds the crocodile. Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars and wrote, "Lake Placid is not a great movie but it has some good laughs, some good scares and a lot of fun". James Berardinelli also gave the film three out of four stars and called it "a guilty pleasure that offers enough entertainment value to make it worth a trip to a theater". Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times described the film as "a witty and sophisticated horror comedy that's also genuinely scary".

However, other critics criticized the film's plot, characters and dialogue as clichÃd, shallow and illogical. Stephen Holden of The New York Times called the film "a crude hybrid of Jaws and Anaconda with dialogue that sounds like warmed-over Scream". Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a D+ grade and wrote, "Lake Placid is a mess -- a bad horror movie with no thrills; a bad comedy with no jokes; a bad eco-fable with no moral". Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle said, "Lake Placid is one of those movies that makes you wish you could sue for false advertising".
