There was a thread "Women Horror Directors" in the Yahoo! Group
"thehorrorofitall" that I got more from, and one by the same name here
on alt.horror

Kathryn Bigelow - Near Dark
Antonia Bird - Ravenous
Deborah Brock - Slumber Party Massacre II
Claire Denis - Trouble Every Day
Roberta Findlay - Snuff; Prime Evil; Blood Sisters
Amy Holden Jones - Slumber Party Massacre
Jackie Kong - The Being; Blood Diner
Mary Lambert - Pet Sematary I & II
Barbara Peters - Humanoids from the Deep
Stephanie Rothman - Blood Bath; The Velvet Vampire
Doris Wishman - A Night to Dismember; Each Time I Kill

The above may have done other horror movies than the ones I listed,
which were just examples.

Surely there must be others?

It was a brilliant stroke giving that film to Harron, who did a great job
even if the film is not perfect. The mysogyny of Patrick Bateman, and the
world he lives in is a hard thing to handle. Harron was able to show that
brilliantly.

I agree. She sort of tamed the story of Patrick Bateman for the screen and
"saved the book from its own bad reputation". The book was great too although
way more savage than the movie.

I don't think that's entirely fair. Near Dark and Ravenous are both
quite good, I think.

As for Lupino, what films did you have in mind? She did direct episodes
of Thriller, The Twilight Zone, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Certainly that counts for something.

I was thinking more of The Hitch-Hiker, but yeah, the TV horror work
counts, too. Lupino's one of my big heroes (and she didn't even have to get

Are you sure if Sato is a woman? The only site I saw mentioning a
gender refered to Sato as a man.

Another female horror director: Katt Shea - The Rage: Carrie 2

Ha! Shimako lives down the block from me. I'm sure she'll be thrilled to
hear this! She also does a lot of work for Capcom, doing the opening to
video games, such as the Bio-Hazard (Resident Evil) headers.

Kathryn Bigelow cannot be forgiven for the incredibly misogynous
STRANGE DAYS, featuring horribly gratuitous rape scenes from the
rapist's POV. Not surprisingly written by her ex-hubbie Little Jimmy
Cameron, who is the King of Misogynists (on film and in real life,
just ask all his other ex-wives).

Positive - she also trained at a London film school and shot much of TALE OF
A VAMPIRE in and around London. There are several sites that mention her
gender, and at least two of the books on Japanese film that I have mention
the fact also. There is a photo of her here:
http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/shimako/profile.html though I admit it's hard
to say anything conclusively from that photo. See also the post from 'Norman

Updating a post of mine from last year:

There are relatively few female horror directors. Not too surprising,
since there are less female directors than men, but there are perhaps
disproportionately fewer female horror directors than there are female
directors generally.

Following are ones I knew of, and I added some directors and titles
from posts on the IMDb's Horror message board
<http://us.imdb.com/board/bd0000024/threads/>. And actually it's
starting to seem like there are quite a few!

Stephanie Aldridge - Slice 'N Dice (2003) (V)
Karen Arthur - Mafu Cage, The (1978); Lady Beware (1987)
Kathryn Bigelow - Near Dark (1987)
Antonia Bird - Ravenous (1999)
Deborah Brock - Slumber Party Massacre II (1987)
Anna Campion - Loaded (1994)
Coralie - Baise-moi (2000)
Claire Denis - Trouble Every Day (2001)
Virginie Despentes - Baise-moi (2000)
Denice Duff - Song of the Vampire (2001) (V)
Roberta Findlay - Snuff (1976); Prime Evil (1988); Blood Sisters
(1987); Lurkers (1988)
Janet Greek - Spellbinder (1988)
Mary Harron - American Psycho (2000)
Bettina Hirsch - Munchies (1987)
Amy Holden Jones - Slumber Party Massacre, The (1982)
Eugenie Joseph - Mind Benders (1987); Spookies (1987)
Jackie Kong - Being, The (1983); Blood Diner (1987)
Fran Robel Kuzui - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)
Mary Lambert - Pet Sematary (1989); Pet Sematary II (1992)
Maria Lease - Dolly Dearest (1992)
Giovanna Lenzi - Delitti (1987)
Jennifer Chambers Lynch - Boxing Helena (1993)
Sally Mattison - Slumber Party Massacre III (1990)
Sharron Miller - Alien Zone (1978)
Barbara Peters - Humanoids from the Deep (1980)
Kristine Peterson - Critters 3 (1991); Deadly Dreams (1988)
Gaylene Preston - Mr Wrong (1985)
Deborah Roberts (I) - Frankenstein General Hospital (1988)
Stephanie Rothman - Blood Bath (1966); Velvet Vampire, The (1971)
Marina Sarghenti - Child of Darkness, Child of Light (1991) (TV);
Mirror, Mirror (1990)
Shimako Sato - Tale of a Vampire (1992); Eko eko azaraku (1995); Eko
eko azaraku II (1996)
Susan Shadburne - Shadow Play (1986)
Katt Shea - Dance of the Damned (1988); Rage: Carrie 2, The (1999)
Lynn Silver - Ghost Stories: Graveyard Thriller (1986)
Lynne Stopkewich - Kissed (1996)
Rachel Talalay - Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991); Ghost in
the Machine (1993)
Ann Turner - Celia (1988)
Doris Wishman - Night to Dismember, A (1983); Each Time I Kill (2002)

The above may have done other horror movies than the ones I listed,
which were just examples.

Know of any female horror directors not named above?

Also, if there are any movies above you really don't agree could be
classified as horror, or if any of the directors are actually males,
post!

I less sure about the gender of:
Helia Colombo - Polizia brancola nel buio, La (1975)
Gabrielle Beaumont - Carmilla (1990); Godsend, The (1980)
Nettie Pena - Home Sweet Home (1981)
Hope Perello - Howling VI: The Freaks (1991) (V)
Dominique Othenin-Girard - Omen IV: The Awakening (1991) (TV); Night
Angel (1990); Halloween 5 (1989)
Rene Dalder - Hysteria (1998); Habitat (1997); Massacre at Central High

Elly Kenner - Black Room, The (1984)

Hi there.

I'd also add Mexican actress Isela Vega (female lead in Peckinpah's Bring Me
the Head of Alfredo Garcia) who directed at least one horror movie called
Lovers of the Lord of the Night (which got a US release), British director
Gabrielle Beamont who helmed The Godsend (1980) as well as one of The
Beastmaster sequels and loads of genre stuff on US TV.

I think Po-Chih Leong who directed Brit vampire flick The Wisdom of
Crocodiles (98) may be female as might be Shimako Sato who directed Tale of
a Vampire (1992).

Jess Franco's long-time muse Lina Romay reportedly directed some movies
under the pseudonym Candy Coster, but so did Franco himself so tracking them
down will be very difficult.

In addition Wendy Toye also directed a segment of Three Cases of Murder
involving a haunted painting which could be considered macabre. I did a
review of that for my website:

www.geocities.com/bigfatpav2000/threecasesofmurder.html

Hope this proves of use.

Cheers.

Lovers of the Lord of the Night looks like it might be hard to get a
copy? Gabrielle Beamont I had on my list towards the bottom - I wasn't
sure of the sex, but I think you're right. I actually have The Gosend,
but haven't watched it yet.

Po-Chih Leong looks like a man in the photo on Yahoo! movies. An
indiewire article refers to Leong as a man also. A user here had
previously identified Sako as female, and she's on the list.

Three Cases of Murder was a good movie, I agree!

Thanks for those, thanks also to Hel-REYzah for identifying Kei
Fujiwara.

Thanks Bonestructure, although it can be hard to tell just from the
name alone. Many names I thought of as exclusively female turn out to
be unisex (or whether it is male or female depends on the individual's
home country). For example, some people think Andrea Bianchi and Kim
Henkel are female directors, but I'm pretty sure they're men. Rene
(that spelling) is apparently a unisex name.

Anyhow, here's yet another I came across last night:

Dorna van Rouveroy - Intensive Care (1992)

I keep learning of more and more female horror directors, I guess they
just haven't received much recognition or attention. In the case of
Dorna van Rouveroy, she's got the number ten movie on IMDb's Bottom
Rated Horror Movies: way to go!

which were just examples.

Should these female directors be added?

· Maya Deren - Meshes of the Afternoon (1943)
· Patty Jenkins - Monster (2003)
· Penelope Spheeris - The Boys Next Door (1986)

There are also some women who have not directed feature films or short
films, but have directed episodes for horror anthology TV series such
as "Monsters" (1988) [TV-Series 1988-1990] and "The Hunger" (1997)
[TV-Series 1997-2000]. Not sure if I should add them? There are also
some who have only worked as assistant directors, but it would be hard
to know how much they did.

Know of any female horror directors not named above?
Also, if there are any movies above you really don't agree could be
classified as horror, or if any of the directors are actually males,
post!

I was less sure about the gender of:

· Rene Dalder - Hysteria (1998); Habitat (1997); Massacre at Central
High (1976)
