Hi,

I'd like to hear what some of your favorite horror movie posters are.
Sometimes, it seems, the artwork is much better than the movie itself!
Maybe a top five from everyone...

That poster must have been HUGE! The biggest one I ever had was a 40 x
60 Mad Max ('79) in my bedroom. I *did* have an Evil Dead, but it was a
traditional 27 x 41 video release poster from 1982 (same art, but for
the video). I bought Dead by Dawn from Rick's in Florida to place next
to it, but the majority of my "collection" was picked up for free from
several video stores in the area. Most just give 'em away. The one I
really wanted was "Black Moon Rising", which I snagged from a bin in a
place that is now out of business.

Now that is truly frightening! Especially since he probably is at least
slightly smellier now than when he was alive! I'm guessing, much like his
stage act, your house is multicolored in different tones of brown, yellow and
red!

...nice list. I love the American poster for Tobe Hooper's THE
FUNHOUSE (the one with the clown grasping an axe, leaning out of a box-
not so much the one with the drooling mouth). I've boasted about this
before but I just got a UK quad for a double-bill of MY BLOODY VALENTINE
and THE FUNHOUSE, which is really nice (and both films have different
artwork to their US counterparts). I also got a UK quad for FRIDAY THE
13TH which is, again, different from the US version- showing a (painted)
tranquil scene at Camp Crystal Lake being interrupted by a huge knife
slicing the scene open revealing a woman's screaming face.

The only two posters I've got framed at the moment are quads for
HALLOWEEN II (loved that pumpkin/skull image forever!); and HAPPY
BIRTHDAY TO ME (again, I love that classic shish-kebab imagery).

I've got quite a few other posters which I want to get framed (when
I have some money). Some of my other faves are UK quads for TERROR TRAIN
and PROM NIGHT; US 1 sheets for THE BOOGEY MAN and GRADUATION DAY; and
original Italian locandinas for SHOCK, SUSPIRIA, INFERNO, FIVE DOLLS FOR
AN AUGUST MOON and ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS.

So many posters- so little wall space. :-(

Justin,

You rat bastard. So you were the one who got that gem? Heh heh. It actually
went fairly affordably didn't it. I also missed out on the incredible ALIEN
and THE FOG double feature quad - I bid it to about $65 American and still lost
out. Oh the humanity. I did however win the PHANTASM/DON'T DO IN THE HOUSE
double bill a while ago. Perfect condition. NICE!

Anyway, I think this guy of the original post was more interested in the
artworks for posters, rather than what we had....so I'll address both.

I've always dug the U.S. artwork for PHANTASM which I have on the wall.
Apparently the artist Joe Smith delivered 4 or 5 full rendered artworks to Avco
Embassy for them to consider. The director, Don Coscarrelli, said they were
all beautiful, vivid and colorful, but that he's never seen them again.
Anybody friends with the JOE SMITH family or estate, please e-mail me some
contact info.

I also dig films with icons or symbols to represent the film. ALIEN and
HALLOWEEN spring to mind. They don't really seem to use this technique much
anymore. Too bad. The HALLOWEEN artwork/actual painting's owner surfaced on
the official website saying he was going to sell the piece but wanted to offer
it to John Carpenter first. I have no idea what came of it.

Ah hell, I'm too tired to write on about artworks. Maybe more later. What I
have on my walls...all are original theatrical one sheets unless otherwise
noted.

However, it seems that from time to time you have no respect for other peoples
opinions at this board. Your "There's no accounting for taste" routine, every

I admit that I have posted some wrong information at this board, but that's

Sensitive??!! Fuck that dude, I'm incapable of being sensitive or being
insulted!
. My retort to Doc has little to do with this post and more to do with past
posts. I just wanted to point out that when you hold a place of respect in
life, be it the President of America to a well respected member of a lowly
Internet horror message board, you need to remember that all people have an
opinion and it should be respected no matter how different there opinions might
be. You could point out that you disagree and give resons why, but no need for
immature comments. (as long as thier opinions are on topic, because I do slam
the wrestling and raciest cross posters pretty hard)
Trust me guys, the good Doc is well capable of defending himself!

...t'was me. :-)

I must admit I was pretty surprised myself that it went so cheap-
which is good news for my bank balance!

The artwork for the poster of both films surprised me. I recognised
the artwork for MY BLOODY VALENTINE as it was the same as that used on
the French poster (which was painted) - of a woman cowering away as a
silhouette of the Miner falls across her. But the image used for THE
FUNHOUSE (which was a painting also) I'd never seen before- showing a
figure in silhouette standing in a funhouse car appearing from a clown's
mouth surrounded tunnel, with machete aloft! ... The poster incorporates
THE FUNHOUSE's great tagline, "PAY TO GET IN. PRAY TO GET OUT!", and
also the line "THE MOST FRIGHTENING THREE HOURS OF YOUR LIFE!",
especially for this double bill.

Does anyone know if (presuming there were independent UK cinema
releases for these two classic slashers) the same artwork used on both
of them?

And speaking of British quads, I'm constantly amazed at how different
artwork was used on genre posters as opposed to their US releases. Apart
from FRIDAY THE 13TH, the original UK quad for HALLOWEEN wasn't the
great staggered knife/pumpkin image that is so well known- rather it is
a shot from the film showing Annie in the car when she gets into it in
the garage, with the tagline, "THE TRICK WAS TO STAY ALIVE!".

The UK release of TERROR TRAIN uses a completely different image as
well- this time of one of the film's male characters having his head
pulled back by the hair in front if a mirror and a knife slashing
through the poster. Complete with the classic tagline, "DON'T BOTHER
BUYING A RETURN TICKET ... YOU WON'T BE COMING BACK!".

Had I known the VALENTINE/FUNHOUSE poster was that cool, I woulda bet the

Yeah, I had a chance to buy that HALLOWEEN quad for $30 years ago and passed on

the foreground approaching Annie, I guess to not give away that he is already

I ordered the British quad for the Road Warrior, thinking it would be
the same as the US release (yellow/orange tones with the rig shot).
Instead, I received "Mad Max 2" with the words "Sometimes One Man Can

Heh. Very cool. It reminds me of the most exciting sneak preview I ever
attended. There was a full page ad in the Philadelphia Inquirer saying "WARNER
BROS. INVITES YOU TO A SNEAK PREVIEW OF A MAJOR SCIENCE FICTION MOTION PICTURE"
There was no title or credits, just the showtime and theater information over
the standard U.S. artwork for ROAD WARRIOR. When we arrive there were limos
out front and a lot of guys in suits and women in furs standing in the lobby,
which now I highly suspect one of which was probably George Miller. It was a
funky downtown theater so there was a pretty mixed crowd of raucous audience
members all totally jazzed to see this big flick, but when the title came up it
said MAD MAX 2...and the entire audience groaned! Remember MM1 didn't fair all
that well in the states, largely because of that bad HE-MAN dubbing so
everyone was disappointed. 5 minutes into the flick though, Max is tearing
through Wez's buddies and the place goes crazy, completely won back over. I
was only about 12 when I saw it, but I'm just about certain the cut I saw that
night was a little different. Seemed there was more torture of the attempted
escapees etc.

Anyway, I don't know how many sneaks like this they held, but without a doubt
that showing had an impact on the marketing of the film primarily causing the
change of the title. I believe we watched VICE SQUAD after that...man, they
don't have double feature sneaks like that anymore!

So...there ya go.

...a while back I was searching for a UK quad of HALLOWEEN but I
couldn't find one anywhere so settled for HALLOWEEN II (the
skull/pumpkin design of which I've always loved). It wasn't until later
that I saw the actual UK design for the first film and, although I kinda
like it, I would have been mightily disappointed after I thought it
would depict the classic image we are so used to.

Another of my personal faves, of the ones I've got, is the design
for HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME with that slack jawed kid about to get shish-

...I believe that the third film was released here (UK) with that
title too. I was just wondering why they didn't go, in the States, for a
title that continued on with ROAD WARRIOR angle if they were so against
the MAD MAX tag after the first film tanked?

I'll tell ya, getting a Mad Max one sheet (27 x 47) was next to
impossible in the early-80s. The only way to get a 1/2 decent dealer
was out of the back of Fangoria magazine, but even they were hard
pressed to get a poster to sell. I think it was Rick's Movie Graphics
that finally had a 40 x 60 on heavy stock paper. I tried everything
from calling Vestron Video (they lied, saying they'll send me one "right
out", 20 years later and I'm still waiting) to asking a buddy who
happened to be going to Austrialia to visit his family.

Getting the US version of the Road Warrior was somewhat eaiser, whereas
it had more "press" than Mad Max. I don't even think that most viewers
back then thought it was even a sequel because of the name change,
either that, or they hadn't heard the first movie. Something about
movie goers back then being trained to spot the next part of a movie by
the big II or III (Rocky, Jaws, Star Trek etc) next to the name. I was
jacked when the RW came out on tape, it's still one of the best action
films of out time.

Oh yeah, Vice Squad was wild! Wings Hauser was a great villian, loved
that cowboy hat.

MAD MAX didn't tank Stateside, per se. It was actually a fairly
successful drive-in exploitation picture and made some money for AIP,
who released it in North America. The title change to THE ROAD
WARRIOR had more to do with Warners' desire to distance itself from
the first film's exploitation reputation. They wanted TRW to stand
alone as a major release.

The popularity of MAD MAX increased exponentially following the
release of THE ROAD WARRIOR, and eventually reached a level of pop
culture awareness sufficient to convince Warners that MAD MAX BEYOND
THUNDERDOME was a more recognizable property than THE ROAD WARRIOR 2.

...sounds about right. Thanks for clearing that up. :-)

I'm not really a poster person, but I do have a huge "Tenebre" poster
signed by Dario Argento which is quite tasty. I prefer getting sets of
stills myself, but they are quite hard to come by.
