Max is an ambulance driver and despite his intimidating looks, he is
gentle and kindhearted. He is assigned a new paramedic partner, a young
and attractive Moroccan woman called Amira and the pair immediately
become friends. Max is smitten with Amira and hopes that their friendship
will develop. One night, they receive a call-out to a nightclub where Max
finds himself very publicly humiliated. After taking some indirect advice
on board, he vows to stand up for himself more. When the pair receive an
emergency call out to a pregnant woman who is experiencing life
threatening delivery complications, they rush to to scene. On the way,
their ambulance is blocked by a group of youths. Against Amira's
instructions, Max gets out and confronts them. Things escalate and Max
punches one of the youths, accidently killing him. The case makes
national headlines and Max loses everything. Filled with remorse, he
tries to rebuild his life, but his notoriety severely hinders his
progress.
This Dutch drama is very good (the title translates as "Manslaughter")
and Max is such a likeable character from the start, that you can't help
but feel for him. I would recommend it just because it is a good film,
but with no horror elements and lacking any real bleakness or grittiness,
I doubt it will appeal to many.
