On the subject of the commune...

There was a fantastic discussion on IRC on 1/29/96 late at night.

(Yes, the IRC that I said I'd never go on but I have recanted <G>)

Anyway, the result of that was that t'shai and I went over the log of the
discussion, and strained out the ideas and suggestions people offerred.

We have also added some other stuff we came up with in a real big
brainstorming session, and as soon as the whole thing is all polished up
and fit to be seen, we want to share it.

Anyone who wants a transcript of that session (At least the part I have)
can let me know. I'll have a version with any private messages edited out
ready to go soon.

We'll be keeping a big document with everyones thoughts, sugestions info
we find, etc. This will be shareable to everyone. And if Mr. Pollard is
still willing to lend the use of that server he mentioned (shame on
everyone for not leaping on that offer) it could be kept in an easy to
access location!

Now, who else wants to help put this info together?

By the way, WintrDrmr came up with the name "Heart's Dream" for the name
of this commune. Does everyone love this name as much as I do? (loaded
question : >)

Does anyone know about getting land or homestead grants?

Meantime, can anyone think of anything that might be useful for starting
or maintaining this commune?

How about stuff we'll need, skills we should have, plans or information or
whatever?

Any ideas, thoughts, gripes, comments, info, ANYTHING?

We're trying to put together a huge compilation of everyone's thoughts.

In addition to this, it would be good to know who really seriously would
like to do this? t'shai and myself do. We have made up our minds. We are
gonna!

Who else will?

As for who would like to do this, I SURE WOULD!!! Unfortunately,
being only 14, I have very little choice in where I live. If this was
going to be in some place like Wyoming (which I think would be
_very_ cool) it would defenitely be out of reach for me, at least
for several years. If this were to get started, though, it sounds like
a place I would love to live.

Um... what's in a name? You're speaking to an AT&T PC7300 owner who set
his nodename to "fdgrus" or something like that [hit keyboard]

Yeah- everyone who decides to help _must_ be _completely_ committed or it
will get nowhere.

Skills? Well, since we're unlikely to be in a densely populated area [as
I'm sure noone wants that] we need general repair, first aid, wiring,
technical repair, etc. If someone gets a bad cut, and the nearest hospital
is an hour away, we need to be able to be self-sufficient there. I'm not
saying don't see doctors- I'm saying be able to bandage cuts. This skill I
don't have but would like to learn. General repair-mechanical, I can do
simple things. Wiring? I am good at that. Tech. repair, I can do. The only
thing is that if I'm there, there's gonna be a T1 socket on the wall.

Idea- we should have at least 2 buildings. Multiple rooms in the
buildings, of course. Seperate space for each person- everyone DOES need
to be alone from time to time. And I might mention funding- work it out
WELL in advance.

Coyote, you KNOW damn well I will, and will be seriously committed to it.

Not true at all! The core people need to be committed to staying the
project out, but anyone else is welcome to chip in as much or as little
work as they can afford.

Come stay for a few weeks in the summer. Spend couple of days hiking
around the mountains and a week or so helping out with labor.

Or help out with a little bit of money, or some tools, or some materials
that you have lying around.

We don't want to drive off the people who like the idea, but aren't fully
committed.

I tend to agree with Rorshash's (sp?) followup on this one...having
to be TOTALLY committed will tend to scare away those who really want
to make it work, but are a little skittish at the biginning...I say
let everyone contribute what they can...and let it be used as a
vacation type spot for visiting Weres until they can get the funds to
move there permanently.

> we need general repair, first aid, wiring,

Lessee...If someone tells me what to do on repair work I can do that
(I know a little, but not enough to want to do something alone)...
I know general first aid (which covers it all), water safty/first aid,
I know a little animal care besides dogs and cats ;)...generally
speaking I know enough about alot to actually help with whatever task
I'm set without being more trouble than it's worth.

> Multiple rooms in the buildings, of course....
Wweeellll...I think this is both a good/bad idea...I think everyone
*generally* agreed that the meeting house/lodge whatever would be up
first...I think it should have various bedrooms in it instead of just the
main room or rooms, this way the workers have a comfortable place to
stay until individual houses come up. After everyone has a house the
old bedrooms in the lodge could be reserved for visiting Weres (if they
didn't want to impose on a resident) and some of the other rooms could
be turned into study type rooms or quiet rooms or what-have-you. This
way you could still be making good use of any room you would have.

Idea on the individual houses...I heard about the thought for the dome
houses that would be inexpensive to build - BUT, IMO the house plans
should be 'flexible' in that if someones particular house needed/wanted
to be added on to, there wouldn't be any big structural problems when
making the add on (ie finding out you would have to rearrange the whole
back of your home just to add on another small bedroom)...although
this would be a problem for the architechtural type students and
definately NOT me!

> > Who else will?
Me! O course I'll be one of the weres that use my Vacation time to
visit/work until I can actually stay there...

Not to mention... imagine the howls and get-togethers!

Imagine a sort of were "homeland" where you know you'd be welcome, and not
have to feel like you needed to hide who you are.

And some people might want to be there but have concerns that prevent them
getting involved at first, or until they are resolved.
