I recently inherited a Schatz mantle chime clock that my Dad bought sometime
in the 50's in Germany. The clock is in desparate need of cleaning and no
longer runs. It was sprayed with WD-40 :-( The insignia on the back is the
words: "AUG. SCHATZ & SOHNE GERMANY" encircling a "W3" if that helps.

I took it to a local repair shop, but they said they won't touch it because
they think the tiny hair spring in the movement is about to break. They can't
get the part and felt that cleaning it would be a waste of time without the
replacing the spring.

So, I'm wondering if a replacement spring might be available somewhere? Or if
other repair shops would be able to tackle this?

Thanks,

I am quite sorry that I am on vacation and can't give you the exact
address or phone number. However, the one and only manufacturer of 400
day clock parts (at least that I know of), is the "Horolovar" company. It
is in Harperwoods Mi, on Harper Ave. If you call informationit should be
1-313-555-1212. However, the last time I needed their number they had yet
to change it from a St Clair Shores, Mi listing so you might have to try
1-810-555-1212. They do mailorder, and do stock (and make if necessary),
suspension springs, blocks and other parts. The owners name is Bill
Ellison. If you intend to work on one for the first time I would also
suggest a "Beat tool", and the book "400 day clocks".

Hope this helps

Your clock is not that rare and most clock repair shops should be able
to repair it . If the hair spring is part of a platform escapement
(no pendulum) it can be replaced or repaired. Call some local shops
(besides the one you tried.

If you let me know where you live I can look up a repair shop that
should be able repair it for you.
