Hello all.

I wanted to buy a pilot's watch and I am wondering what Fortis watches
are (about quality), as compared for example, to the TAG Heuer F1, if they
are better or worse. Also, those fortis watches (they say they are
manufactured to meet cosmonaut requirements) are automatic. Is this
automatic movement precise as compared to a quartz movement?

I have seen the Fortis Pilot's chronograph, the Fortis Cosmonaut's with
tachymetre, and the TAG F1 with chronograph.

So, I understand that automatic movements are less exact or precise than
quartz movements, right?

And what do you think about the comparison Fortis/TAGHeuer

If you are looking to get the most watch for your money and if your
decision boils down to the Tag F-1 series or a Fortis, the only way you might
not want to get the Fortis is if your wrist is too small to wear it, or you
can't locate a "mid-size" version.

Where the watch movement is concerned, over a long haul, a quartz movement is
more accurate. Over short time, mechanical movements may be more accurate.
The accuracy question is raised a lot and is difficult to address.....just how
accurate do you need a watch to be ? If it must be precise at all times, get
the Junghans "Mega" quartz watch, which is supposed to be accurate to around
10 seconds a year. If you want a watch movement that requires little in the
way of maintenance, get quartz. If you want one that holds its value a little
better, despite the fact that watches, gems, and other jewelry is not and
should not be considered "investments", get the automatic movement.

Clearly, Tag is a more recognized brand name, and it appears their marketing
is one of the few things the company has going for it. You don't really see
Fortis advertised anywhere and you don't often see someone wearing one. I
bought the Fortis "Pilot" a couple months ago and it is a decent watch. The
dial is 40 mm wide, so you will need a large wrist to wear it. The face is
easy to read, and the second hand glides almost as smoothly as a Rolex does.
My understanding is that Fortis has been using "ETA" Swiss automatic
movements. While the Fortis is no Rolex and certainly not high end, it is a
very good bang for the buck. You can get a "Pilot" for around less than half
what you might spend on a similarly equipped Tag, and the goal should be to
spend little and get a lot.

If you are interested in Fortis, check "Silvermagic", a watch seller in
Switzerland.....http://www.smwatches.com You may be able to do a better
comparison between various brands of watches there.

Good value for the money. I'd never pay more than $600 for a watch with a
quartz movement, unless the case/band were made of precious metals.
