I just got an old Rado Diastar off eBay and I'm curious what the stones
on the face are. For $80, I doubt I have 11 real diamonds on my
wrist. Did they use rhinestones or what for these things?

Here's a picture:

I have wanted a Rado since I was about 7 years old. My babysitter told
me about this kind of neat watch that was indestructible. I was
fascinated. I couldn't remember what brand he meant until I was in
college and I looked at a Rado brochure and made the connection.
Anyway, I suspect this is only my first foray into swiss watch
collecting. Now, if I can only find a nice chronometer with a Valjoux
movement for the same price...

I always believed the stones were diamonds, but I am really not sure at
all. I never researched that

You will find if you attack the watch with a hammer that it is not
indestructible, and whilst you will not be able to scratch the case you will
be able to fracture it so it literally crack right across. I know you wont
try it, but thought you would be interested. I did research that, but I
withhold the details!

BTW sounds like some babysitter.

I stopped by Bailey, Banks & Biddle while at the mall this weekend and,
seeing that they carried Rado, asked if they knew what the deal with
the old Diastars was. The lady said the new ones used real diamonds
but she looked at mine with a loupe and said she was sure the old ones
used "Austrian Crystal", which I believe is rhinestone. She said it
was still a nice watch, but then I already knew that :-)

I am always impressed when I do a service on one of these watches, is
how the case and band looks as though it just came out of the factory,

many, many moons ago, I worked for a service centre with Rado being one
of the brands they worked on, my then boss showed me a not very old Rado
diastar(6-7 months old) with its tungsten carbide case and sapphire
crystal that had scratches all over it, and some of the scratches were
deep.

asking what had happened to a supposedly "unscratchable" watch?, he said
the owner would brag to his friends "look at this watch I have, its
unscratchable!(and I paid a lot of money for it)", he would then take it
off his arm and proceed to rub it on what ever surface was handy, brick,
stone, concrete you name it.

...... Nothing is foolproof, fools are too ingenious! ......
