There was a John Bryson, watchmaker and Clockmaker located
in Dalkeith (Not far from Edinburgh) in the 1830's and 1840's,
which 'could' be the same individual (does anyone know?).
And/or can anyone tell me the relationship of *any* John Bryson
to the better-known watchmaker and clockmaker Robert Bryson
of Edinburgh? Robert died in 1852, but his firm (Robert Bryson
& Sons) spanned much of the 19th century, and was in business
until 1893. Neither of his known sons was named John.
Response copies to my email address would be helpful.
thanks
Lloyd

However an article in Clocks Magazine (I have a photocopy but no date)
Clocks of the British Isles Part 2 North of the Border, says that Robert
Bryson FRSE ... the firm was then carried on by two sons, the elder son
Alexander ... - no name of the younger son.
I have a longcase clock by Robert Bryson of Edinburgh dated 1797, it is
quite plain and not made to any high quality, however it has kept going for
200 years so cannot be too bad.
I hope the information is of interest to you.
My particular area of interest in the Brysons stems from the article
mentioned above in Clocks which describes proceedings of the Royal Society
of Scotland where Mr Alexander Bryson conceded that Alexander Bain had
anticipated him in the development of a clock impelled by a combination of
gravity and electro-magnetism. If you have any information on this
encounter I would be grateful to receive it, I went up to Edinburgh and
while there tried to do some research but the archives of the RSS were
closed for redecoration.
