I recently got a watch as a gift (analog, Japanese Quartz) and the ticking
of the second hand is rather loud. So loud that I had to move it out of my
room before I go to sleep. Is this normal of all analog "tick, tick"
watches (at least ones that aren't very expensive)? Thanks.

Most quality (and i say that with a quiet, but stern snigger) Jap
movements do not make a lot of noise as most of them use soft plastic
wheels and plates and are properly fitted into the case. Ie: Seiko,
Citizen and their siblings.
A lot of cheapies also use these very same movements and generally are
not very audible. However, a lot depends on the case, fitment of the
movement and indeed the dial size.

My advice is to learn to live with it, or tell the person who gave it
to you, that you've got mugged. :-)

It's a conspiracy to make you go crazy.
Can you think of any reason why anyone would want you to go insane?

I bought a Wenger watch by mail as a gift. The ticking sound was so loud
that I returned it.

Even in expensive quartz watches the ticking can be very loud. My Rolex
Oysterquartz is quite loud. I am sensitive to noise, so at night I put
it in another room!
