A co-worker's husband has an old Waltham pocket watch and would like more
information about it. I have a copy of Shugart's book #18, but so far have
been unable to identify the pocket watch. I'll give as much informatin I can:
The movement is a 15 jewel movement, with the winder at the 3 o'clock position.
The dial is white (porcelain?) and has roman numerals, with arabic (5, 10, 15,
etc...) behind the romans. There is a sub-second dial at the 6 o'clock
position. The movement is marked:
Safety barrel
Crescent
Warranted 25 years
A.W.W. Waltham, Mass
CWCC then it looks like a star and a half-moon
There are 2 numbers - 920278 and 9238422
This is only information that I have received over the telephone. I have not
personally seen the watch as of yet. The watch is an open-face design, but
unfortunately is missing the crystal and second hand. If anyone can provide me
with any more information regarding this watch I'd appreciate it greatly!

Mark - Judging from the 2 serial numbers given, I'm guessing that the
6 digit number is the CASE's serial number, which is a gold-filled
case (this shown by the "warranted 25 year" marking). Crescent is
probably the case manufacturer.

If, as I suspect, the 7 digit number is the serial number, the closest
that I can come to it without my books is a manufacture date of about
1901.

It may not be the original case, since you say it is an open-face case
and the stem is at the 3 o'clock position, which is a feature of
hunting case watches.

Hope that that is what you're looking for.

Hello Mark. Looks like you have a "sidewinder", which is a hunting
cased movement, now housed in an open faced case. My guess is that it
was originally housed in a gold case, that was either melted down during
the depression, or the owner put a higher grade movement in the original
case. According to the serial number you list, you have a 16 size, 15
jewel, model 99, grade 620, hunting case movement. The case was made by
Crescent Watch Case Co (CWCC), and the Crescent moon and star was their
trademark. "Warranted 25 years", indicates it's gold filled. The model
99 movement was made for many years, by Waltham, in (I believe) 7 - 17
jewel configurations. It is very common, and has little value, unless
housed in a gold hunting case. Regards, Allan
