I have a Citizen diver watch and would like to know
whether the crystal is made of sapphire or mineral glass.

The information off the back of the watch is as follows:

CITIZEN
WATER RESIST
STAINLESS
3802-450868 Y
6020447
37-0011
GN-4-S
JAPAN

I went to Citizen's website (http://www.citizenwatch.com) and
found what looks like the exact same watch. Look in the Aqualand
collection for model AJ0100-02E. Here is what info I found:

Professional Diver

Model AJ0100-02E
MSRP US: $199.95

FEATURES:

One-Way Rotating Elapsed-Time Bezel
Battery Life Indicator
Screw-Back Case and Screw-Down Crown
Water Resistant to 666 ft. (200 meters)
Operates on Battery Power

As far as I can tell it is the same watch. There is no battery
life indicator as stated in the advertised features and the pic
does not show one either.

I do not want to do a hardness (scratch test) to determine the
crystal material, any suggestions ?

If it doesn't explicitly _say_ it's sapphire, it isn't.
A sapphire crystal is something they are very proud of and and when it has one, they'll say so.

"Clutter"? This is an object-rich environment.

Battery life indicator is given as a feature on some sites for this watch.
It wouldn't show in a picture - the usual indicator is that the second hand
begins to jump 5 secs at a time. This costs almost nothing to implement -
just some lines of code in the chip programming and so is found even on some
$10 watches.

Crystal nowadays is usually mineral glass unless otherwise stated. No need
to scratch it purposely - it will be scratched on its own soon enough.

Ordinary mineral glass, the same stuff you find in your windows.

If it was a sapphire crystal, they'd tell you.

Seiko vs Citizen Diver review.. (mechanical divers) Not all that relevant.

Sapphire is rather expensive and adds about $50 or $60 to the price of a
watch., FYI. Nice case you've got there. Day AND Date. A lot of watch for
the price. If it had a sapphire crystal it would be $275. Enjoy.
