I would appreciate it if anyone can provide info on what, in horological
terms, a clock should do automatically that a timepiece does not.

According to this definition, a minute repeater pocket watch or wrist watch is
a clock rather than a time piece.

Originally - in 1500/1600's such 'pocket' items were indeed clocks in
miniature,
However, forget hair splitting, this is not rocket science. The modern
terminology is as stated:
Clocks make noises of various kinds to alert one to set intervals.
Timepieces do as they say and tell one the time peacefully.
NEITHER is any kind of watch.
