What are the best cements for the various types or wristwatch crystals
(plastic, glass & mineral)? I have used Suc "Rocket cylinder" tube cement
with varying somewhat disappointing results.

TIA

I got G-S Hypo cement of eBay (under 'the best jewelery glue ever')
and it worked well with a plastic crystal.

No idea if it is the best stuff but it was only $4.99!

Thanks, I've seen that one but never used it. I'm surprised there isn't
more feedback on something as basic as crystal cement. I thought there were
some watchmakers on here. Oh well.

there are, but we are on holidays ;)

I just use Uhu or 5min clear epoxy. if you warm the bezel first the stuff
flows like water

I use the G-S Hypo for plastic crystals when they are compressed before
being inserted into the bezel. I use a brand name 5 minute epoxy for
everything else.

I have spoken to guys that really like the ultraviolet curing
cyanoacrylite and have been meaning to do some trials with it. I did
recently do some trials of non-frosting "optical" cyanoacrylite glues
from Loctite but they all failed within a year. I have yet to get back
to trying something new.. the old stuff works pretty well. <g>

Cheers! Ian.

Thanks for the replies to this. So, do you just get a good brand of 5
minute epoxy at the local hardware, or do you use something special from the
trade suppliers like vigor jeweler's? The former, I'm guessing.

yeah I don't botter with gluing in a plexi that has to be compressed and
its fitted into a bezel that is undercut

I do like the ultraviolet curing CA cements, works really well on plain
crystals flat or curved that fit into a thin lipped bezel, note; it
doesn't work too well where the crystal is paint on the back.

the ultraviolet curing CA cement is very thin so it flows easily, pop the
crystal on and leave in the sun for ten minutes or so, great.

I use "Uhu" brand 5min epoxy, nice and clear, araldite 5 minute epoxy

dAz I haven't seen "Uhu araldite" in Canada. Sounds good though. I've
been using LePages but have no data on it just experience. The
distributor for 3m and Loctite products here has a few good looking
candidates for epoxies by 3m but they all come in dispensers that are
inappropriate for my use.

Cheers! Ian.

Uhu is made by http://www.uhu.de/ the 5 min epoxy

araldite is made by Selleys http://www.selleys.com.au/index.htm there is
a new Ultra clear 5 min epoxy that as the name says dries very clear, not
with that slightly yellow tinge of some epoxies.

I know what you mean by the dispensers, I try and only buy it in small
tube packs or at worst those dual syringe packs.

the Sellys araldite is probably only available in Australia, but there is
bound to be somethng similar in your area, try a hobby shop that sells
kits and materials for model planes and boats, they sell epoxies used in
making the models

Thanks dAz.
There are plenty to choose from here. The ones I like are in those
ghastly twin tube dispensers with a long mixing tube to premix the two
elements before you have any released from the tube.. that said... I'm
not terribly unhappy.. just curious about what's out there.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers! Ian.
