I have seen their web site and for the repair of this clock [mine is
1950's per the research] they want a lot of cash. Is there anywhere
near the Boston area anyone can recommend for cleaning - I think this
is all it really needs - and or repair? Thanks - BAS

If you want it done correctly and up to factory "spects", then
I'll be glad to help. Think about it, if Atmos work was as easy as
you make it out to be, then every one would advertise that they in
fact overhaul the Atmos. When you're ready for "real" service then
I'll be here.

I also advertise in the MART, The Horological Times, and
The Watch & Clock Review.

Because of the complexities of the Atmos clock, an Atmos needs a
complete overhaul even though there seems to be only a slight or
small problem.

The current price of an overhaul for the Atmos is $250.00 which
includes all labor, and $2,000.00 return shipping insurance. My
charge for shipping and handling is $30.00. This brings your total
cost to $280.00 plus any needed parts. One part of note because of
its expense is the bellow also called the motor. It is the large
round "bowl shaped" object on the back of the clock. The current
replacement cost (if needed) is $175.00. The service takes about 10
to 16 weeks and includes a 3-year warranty on all labor and any part
you paid for and installed by myself.

Also, many overhauls require a new suspension spring which currently
cost $75.00 installed. It has been my experience that if the serial #
of the Atmos is under 150,000 then, most likely, the suspension spring
WILL need replacing, if it is the original part. Also, there is a
possibility in these older Atmos' that the mainspring is set. A set
mainspring has lost its ability to hole the wind and therefore cannot
drive the clock. If a mainspring is needed the current cost is
$75.00.

The reason I give a 3-year warranty is because I feel that no one can
touch my service or expertise in the repair of the Atmos clock. Also,
most Atmos clocks will run about 14 months on a full wind of the
mainspring which all "repair persons" do for any level of service.

I advise shipping the Atmos within the original carton if available.
In any case please be sure to double box the clock and insure it for
at least $2,000. By double box I mean to pack the 1st and 2nd boxes
as if you were going to ship each independent from the other one.
Also, to reduce your shipping costs ship via UPS be sure that the
2nd box measures 16" x 16" x 14" or less.

My turnaround is usually 10 to 16 weeks. Please be sure to LOCK the
pendulum before doing ANYTHING! Old parts are returned by request
only.

Upon the receipt of the clock I inspect it to make sure that it
survived its' trip to the Clinic. If all appears okay it usually
takes about 8 or 10 weeks to start the overhaul and then I call or
write you if any parts are needed.

I ONLY accept money orders, certified checks, or company checks
for payment.

Once testing starts it is performed in two parts. The first test is
the function test to ascertain whether or not my overhaul was
satisfactory. Then the second test is the timing test which takes
about 2-weeks. During this 2-week period I use the U.S. Postal
Service to mail you a copy of the invoice and I expect payment in the
form mentioned above. I shipped when both the payment and the testing
period have been satisfied.

When I ship back the clock the package will contain your original
invoice and an instruction manual that I authored.

Please be advised that the original estimate cannot determine whether
or not the suspension spring currently has the strength to properly
assist the rotation of the pendulum. Most times the original
suspension spring can be used but I cannot guarantee that fact until I
complete testing.

If you decide not to go ahead with the repair, then I return the Atmos
via UPS and COD. The charge will be $40.00 labor, plus the COD charge
($4.00), plus my standard shipping and the insurance charges ($30.00).
This total works out to be $74.00 for an Atmos returned unrepaired
after my estimate. The COD is dropped if you are a previous customer
of mine.

I do not do any work, repair, or refinishing on the case.

Respectfully,

Michael P. Murray
