Anyone out there who can tell me who made pocket and then wrist
watches for Eatons Department stores in Canada?

I have a salesman's cased 18 size pocket watch. I have been told
my a watch maker in Quebec that Rolex made the Gallant model
for pocket watches back in the 1900-1930 era. Any truth to that?

I have 3 Henry Birks & Son pocket watches made by Longines.

All of the 16 and 18 size high grade Eaton watches I've seen were made by
Gallet of Switzerland. The 18 size watches bear a strong resemblance to the
Waltham 1892 model.

Many thanks for the reply! Yes, I noticed the movement had a
"waltham" look about it. :-)

Are you in Canada? I'm in Vancouver and I feel like I'm on Mars
when it comes to meeting other pocket watch collectors here. :-)

Ken,
Sorry, I'm in upstate NY.
I'm a railroad watch collector and became interested in some of the watches
used on North American railroads that were not made in the U.S.. Some of the
best known makers, such as Vacheron & Constantin, Gruen, Omega, Longines and
Zenith made watches specifically for RR service.
Oddly enough, although the Gallet watches made for Eaton met all of the
requirements for RR service, we have never found documentation that they were
actually accepted on any of the Canadian roads.

I didn't know Eaton's had their own brand of watches, only that they gave
away a Rolex with the quarter century dial every so often to their long-term
employees for years of dedicated service. Eaton's has been taken over by
Sears, which used to also have their own brand, called Tradition. I wonder
who will be buying out the Hudson's Bay Company when it, too, goes the way
of the dodo in the next 2 years.

Cheers,
Dave ( ex Vancouverite - now in Nanaimo)

There are chapters of NAWCC in Vancouver, and in Calgary. Visit NAWCC
website for details. I am in Calgary, and I know you would be welcome
at our meetings. Next one is a week from tomorrow. Lethbridge is
only a couple hours away.

On of their brands was "Renown". I have one that was a Christmas present in
1955. I re-cased it in the early 1960s, but the movement is still good. That
is surprising, as it is a pin pallet movement!
